question about Level 2 sono
i called to make my appt today and they said before i go, have my dr fax them my prenatal records and the results from my AFP.
What is the AFP because i dont think i'm getting one! Is it the same as the ultrascreen? I'm not getting the ultrascreen done.

Re: question about Level 2 sono
I think they asked b/c they want to know if there is anything specific that they should be looking for...
My eldest daughter has Mosaic Down Syndrome and its written on my script for the Level II...
When I called today I asked if the Perinatologist did it or if a tech did it..she said that only the peris did the LEvel II sonograms..when I mentioned that that was good b/c my daugher had D/S she said that she would note my appointment as such so that the dr could take that into account when doing the Sono...
There are several "soft markers" that could indicate D/S on a Ultrasound...ex: Short Femur Bone...

Re: question about Level 2 sono
The AFP stands for Alpha-Feto-Protein. It's a blood test that measures the amount of protein in the mother's blood. It is done to detect certain genetic abnormalities. It is mandatory in some states, I don't know if ours is one of them.

IT's usually done around 14-16 weeks....After the ultrascreen.
The ultrascreen focuses more on Trisonomy and DS and congential and chromosonal defects, where as the AFP is more towards spinal disprders, spinal bifida etc....
