Question about pointing

When it comes to milestones, is reaching for something they want the same thing as pointing?

Re: Question about pointing

I'm really not sure, but Thomas starting reaching out for things about 11 1/2 months and then quickly went to pointing with his index finger. Now, he does both. Sometimes he reaches out for something with his whole hand and sometimes he points with his index finger.

I know it isn't the same exact thing...but he is still showing he's wants something inparticular, right? Chat Icon

That sounds right to me, but I'm no expert. Chat Icon I'm sure he's fine. Chat Icon

This is what Tyler does. He'll reach or grab for something with his whole hand but I dont know if he points with just his index finger. I will have to pay closer attention...I just assumed that being he is "pointing" at an object and showing he wants something it is the same thing.

I have Thomas' 12 month appointment on Monday. I'd be happy to ask my ped if you want for some quick piece of mind before Tyler's next appointment. Let me know.

In terms of function, it serves the same purpose... either to show something to or request something. In terms of fine motor skill its a little different. I'm not an OT but I'm pretty sure isolating the finger is more difficult than using the whole hand to reach.

Absolutely - the biggest thing we are looking for at this age is communicative intent using some type of gesture and joint attention - so, if your 1 yr old/ young toddler is reaching with an open hand to something out of his reach, making some type of noise and looking at you to let you know that he wants it and you should get it for him, that is whats important. At this point, they don't have enough fine motor skills for a good lear point, but reaching and lokoing is the most important thing at this age in terms of social and communicative function... HTH!
