Question about selling
When you sell a house, what's the rule as far as window treatments go? I assume the curtains come with me, but what about all of the hardware I installed (curtain rods and hold-backs).
Stupid me - I installed all Pottery Barn stuff - and it hurts to think about leaving it all behind.....but I'm pretty sure I have to.
Anyone with knowledge on this?

Re: Question about selling
you can take everything with you. You don't need to leave it unless it is specified in your contract.

Re: Question about selling
Its up to you. You can remove and take it if you if want - unless you included it in your contract. The only things you CAN't take are things actually connected to the house - like to water.

Re: Question about selling
I'd take it. Especially if I thought I'd be able to use it again. The woman who sold us our house took everything down to lightswitch covers. She even took some of the ceiling light fixtures and left cheap azz, $5 light covers in their place.

Re: Question about selling
You can take those things with you. Just make sure that when you review the contract with your attorney that the window treatments and hardware are not included as part of the deal. If they are...just have your lawyer remove them so that it's clear. You definitely can leave the windows bare.

Re: Question about selling
Our house was bare when we moved in. Only one set of blinds was left, and the custom fit shades for the sitting room.

It is usually included in the contract but you can have it taken out.

Re: Question about selling
our sellers mentioned that the wondow treatments were not included (with other things), but our lawyer told us that people like to use it as leverage to negotiate. I think the seller was in shock when I told her to take the curtains (they were hidious to me, but she had made them all). They ended up leaving everything for me to just throw away.
The problem with taking it with you: will the windows be the same size - will there be the same amount of windows in each room?

Traditonally, its assumed that they stay along with light fixtures, switch plates, outlet covers, etc.
If the owner plans on taking them with them it should be written in the contract.
Several houses that I saw told me what they were taking when I went to see the house.

Re: Question about selling
it depends about what's in your contract. Several homes we've checked out say the window fixtures are stayiing and as DH and I are like "YUCK, they could take em for all I care".
