What determines what Step you are on? is there a chart or listing of what the requirements are to start on each Step ?

Re: question about teacher "STEP" scale
1. Education 2. Experience
Each year you go up a step for expereince and you can also move over in terms of education. In NYC the highest is Bachelors plus Masters plus 30 credits
You can do a search and find the NYC payscale

Re: question about teacher "STEP" scale
The Step is your experience, so for example, it's your fifth year teaching, you are on Step 5.
The differntial is the education level, so for example, say you Masters degree and 30 additional credits, your differential is Masters +30 credits.
The combined step and differntial would make you Step 5, Masters +30.
Your district's contract should outline the step and differential scales for your district.

Re: question about teacher "STEP" scale
just to let you know - step is where you can negotiate. My sister was able to negotiate private, professional experience, when she entered into teaching. There are some stories of districts offering step 20 to high need areas.
but once you are on a step - it is set - you can only move up one year at a time.
