Question about transitioning to milk
So we are transitioning DD, it has been going good as far as her not having any reactions. But she does not drink that much milk. I will give her about 6 oz's 3 times a day but she takes FOREVER to drink the milk.
I have a few questions:
1) how long can the milk stay in the sippy cup before it should be discarded...it will take her sometimes 2 hours to finish it
2) how much milk should she be drinking per day?
TIA

Re: Question about transitioning to milk
Are you using an insulated cup? I wouldn't leave milk out long at all. I don't know the time frame but I would think no more than 1/2 hour - 1 hour.
My DD doesn't drink ANY milk at all and the ped said she only needs 2 servings of calcium per day (so for eg 1 piece of cheese and 1 yogurt)
Most babies don't take much milk esp since they are primarily on table foods. Ask your ped what he/she recommends, but I wouldn't worry about amount since she is probably getting calcium from other souces now.
Hope that helps a little.

Re: Question about transitioning to milk
2hrs to drink the milk? What if you discard it after 1hr? Will she drink more on her next bottle and finish it quicker?
DS has always been a big drinker at that age he was drink 4 8oz bottles of formula a day .

Re: Question about transitioning to milk
DD is a little different because she drinks soy milk but my ped gave me a range of 16-24oz/day. As far as leaving the milk w/DD who used to also take forever drinking milk if I saw she abandoned her sippy cup I would put it back in the fridge for about 20-30mins then take it out and offer it to her again.

Re: Question about transitioning to milk
My DD isn't a big drinker in general - the ped told me that I should make sure that she is getting atleast 15 oz. a day and if not then to make sure that she has cheese or yogurt to suppliment.
I wouldn't leave the milk out too long either. I would think that warm milk probably wouldn't taste to good for her either.
Maybe try giving her 1/2 a cup and then refilling a little bit later.
Do you give it to her with meals? We usually give DD three small cups - one with each of her meals and a 6 oz. bottle at night before she goes to bed. Sometimes she will ask for more in the afternoon if she has a snack (especially at grandma's for some reason). I have found that she drinks more with the meals since the food makes her thirsty. In between meals I find that she gets distracted really easily and it will take her forever to drink it.

Re: Question about transitioning to milk
I keep milk about an hour out of the fridge.
My PEd told me max of 16 ounces of milk a day. It fills them up and takes away from food, also something about milk stops other nutrients from being absorbed. Milk is not like formula.
My DD drinks 8ozs when she gets up in the am, and 8ozs after dinner. Rest of the day is water.

She used to drink a TON of formula but with the milk, she will drink a little, then put the sippy down and them come back to it and drink a little more, etc
I may try to discard it after an hour and just give her less in the sippy. Thanks

we normally give it to her after meals but like in the morning, I give her milk in the sippy and she wants nothing to do with it. She is going for her one year visit on the 31st so I will bring this up to the ped....
I like the idea of offering it to her after she eats so that she will be hungry. Thanks

Re: Question about transitioning to milk
We just transitioned, so I am giving Taylor 1/2 milk and 1/2 of similac go and grow, she seems to drink a little less than she did of the formula. Once the can of formula is gone, she will go straight to milk. She still won't use a sippy, I can't find one that is easy for her to handle

Re: Question about transitioning to milk
I am just switching over to milk too. The past three days I started with replacing the afternoon bottle of formula with milk in the sippy cup. I am curious if you are still using bottles in the morning and at night or strictly the sippy? THanks

Re: Question about transitioning to milk
Sorry I have no advice, as we will start to transition to milk in a couple of weeks, but your post gave me some tips, so thank you and good luck!
