question for a lawyer re: Sandy and renting
I live in Long beach and our apartment did not suffer any damage - we were very fortunate! We live in a large managed building. We noticed many buildings in long beach had large generators brought in after it was safe to do so. Ours did not. While our building suffered some damage, it was relatively safe I'd say 3 days after the storm, except no power, water, heat, and no plumbing for about a week. So I didn't consider the conditions livable. Now we have power, running water, but no heat or gas. I personally do not consider the apartment to be in livable conditions because of the lack of heat, but Im not sure what the laws would say. We were told there may not be heat for a few weeks. I was just wondering if there were any laws about pro-rated rent? There is not anything in our lease about natural disastors or the after effects. We didn't know how much of our rent we are responsible for while unable to live there. The management company has told tenents we are responsible for 100% fo the rent regardless. But I wanted to check with another source.
Thanks for any help!! Sorry this was so long! :)
