Question for formula feeding moms

Do you use distilled water to make the formula (for a newborn), or is Poland Spring water okay?

The reason I ask is because DH and I went to see friends of ours and their new baby yesterday, and they use Poland Spring water to make the bottles. I specifically remember our ped (at an orientation class) saying to use distilled water.

If they are supposed to be using distilled water, would you say anything? We're very close with them, and I think they would take it okay.

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

tap water filtered in the brita pitcher.

I never heard to use distilled water until my mom kept bringing it up at the hospital and I finally made her ask the nurses (to shut her up) and they said that they dont do that anymore.

I use Poland Spring. I have for both kids who had different ped practices and nobody has said there was anything wrong with it.

ETA: when we were in the city, we also used tap filtered through Brita (per ped) but our LI ped said to use the bottled so I've been doing that for DD.

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

I started formula feeding after 3 months and we use the RTF when we're at home. When we go out we use the powder and we use Poland Spring bottled water.

Thanks ladies! I guess that was just my ped's opinion, not the norm anymore.

When DS was on powdered formula we either boiled tap or used bottled water.

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

I boiled the water for all DS's bottles then put it in a pitcher for the day and left it on the counter so it was room temp.

When we were on vacation I used the nursery water.

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

always used tap, filtered through a brita.

If you do some research you will see, at least in this area, our tap water is more regulated and in many cases "cleaner" than alot of bottled water.

My ped said she always used tap for her own kids.

ETA: Plus I always thought to myself, if you pay for bottled water to make the bottles, doesnt that pretty much negate the savings of powder formula vs RTF?

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

I rarely use powder, but when I do, I also boiled the water first. If I was in a pinch, I use bottled.

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

I boiled then filtered Poland Spring water with a brita. I would do a large amount at a time and store it in glass containers.

ETA: It might be overkill, but clean water is my thing....

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

My pediatrician said not to use bottled water. With R I used boiled water that I left at room temp. With C we have a filter on the sink so I use that.

I might just say something like in an easy, breezy kind of way Chat Icon

eta: I DO use bottled water if I am out and don't have any filtered water.

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

I use distilled water. I live in Queens and the tap water here is fluoridated. You have to be careful how much you give an infant of fluoride. I don't think the Poland Spring bottles are controlled for fluoride (some actually even add more). The baby should only get .25mg fluoride/day AFTER 6 months (none is even recommended before). There was an article in the Journal of the American Dental Association talking about how infants with powdered formula may be taking in too much fluoride. In LI, tap water should be fine...I'd be careful to not use regular Poland Spring - use the distilled instead. If the water is fluoridated, about 8 oz/day is okay, but don't give the vitamin with fluoride then. (Most cities are 1ppm fluoride, which is ~1g/gallon which is equivalent to .25g/8oz.) HTH!

Re: Question for formula feeding moms

We use Brita filtered tap at home, bottled water if on the road. Pediatrician never said anything about using distilled.
