Question for moms of newborns who BF

DS is going to be 4 weeks tomorrow. I have been lucky in that he has been a good eater since day one and we had no problems with him latching. My question is how often do your DC eat? At first DS had to eat every two hours because of his Jaundice. Now the Ped says to feed him every 3 to 4 hours or whenever he is hungry. Well DS would like to nurse whenever he is awake. He does not like to take a Pacifier for comfort and will cry until I feed him. I would like to get him on a better schedule. He is going to start Daycare in 5 weeks so I want to try to get him into a routine. I do feed him when he is hungry but I am not sure if this is normal for a 4 week old. Sometimes he eats every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Sounds normal to me! He's only 4 weeks ... I wouldn't expect him to be eating much different from that for at least another 2 weeks or so. BF is made to be 'feed on demand' so just go with that and don't worry about a routine for now! Chat Icon

Thanks!!! That is what I thought. I just wanted to make sure that was normal. I figured it was good that he has a healthy appetite.

Go with the flow!!!! BF is a demand thing. It's not about ounces and timing. It takes a long time to establish any pattern. You're doing great!!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Question for moms of newborns who BF

my DS is just a month old as well and we are pretty much doing the exact same thing---its only occasionally he goes 3 hours before nursing again---he just came home from the NICU and the nurses there told me its very common for a breast fed baby to eat more often--breast milk is also easier (aka faster) for them to digest then formula, so that plays a part to!
