Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
Hey Gals, We are TTC yet, but I've put on a lot of weight since marriage and I know I've got to loose weight (and quit smoking) before I TTC. How much weight is too much weight for a preggo lady?
PLEASE ONLY ANSWER IF YOU ARE PLUS SIZED. Thanks

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
it depends on your health...
i was a size 18/20 when i got pregnant..
i've gained about 25lbs in total.... which is pretty much all belly and boobs.....
i feel fine... i had asthma to begin with thats the only thing that got aggrevated while being pregant...
as long as your healthy right now meaning no major problems due to being plus size... and it's okay with yout GYN i would go ahead and TTC...
i felt it was a little meaningless to loose weight just to gain it back and loose it again after giving birth....
i enjoyed my pregnancy too.. i didnt diet i ate what i wanted... i've been overwweight my whole life i wasnt going to diet while being pregant too.....
just confirm with your doctor if it's okay for you healthwise to TTC...
my doctor said of course it would be better if you lost weight but it wouldn't cause any harm either... so i said screw it.. i wasnt waiting anymore....

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
Hey Kerry,
I've been wondering the same thing since we're planning to start TTC in a few months (!!!!!).
I did want to make sure that I was at least out of the "danger zone" before I got pregnant (I was VERY, VERY heavy just a year ago), so both Danny and I have been following WW. I agree with the OP that there's no sense in crash dieting if you've been heavy your whole life, I just wanted to make sure that I'd be giving the baby the best possible chance to be healthy.
Personally I don't think you have anything to worry about!

Beth I love ya!!!! I knew you'd understand. Its so tough. Hey I know I've gotta loose weight, and I don't want another thing to worry about once I become PG (in addition to my thyroid). It sounds like I should be ok. I may first try to quit smoking (so I can pack on MORE weight) and then do WW again. I also have a wedding in May I need to shape up for.

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
Are you hypothyroid as well? I was diagnosed when I was 20. IMO, that's the most important thing to stay on top of. It scares me to think that, should your levels shift just a bit during pregnancy, it can cause MC. I've been having my levels checked about 4x a year for that reason!
More than anything, I'm concerned about finding cute maternity clothes in my size!!
See you tomorrow!

nope, I'm Hyperactive (ie Graves Disease). I've been to a reproductive endo and go to my endo 4x a year. She gave me clearance, but as soon as I do become PG, I have to go in for an emergency apt. to redo my meds. I take 12 pills a day. If I were PG, I'd take around 4 pills a day.

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
I would concentrate more on quitting smoking. That is a huge step in the right direction.
I am overweight too - size 18/20 pre-pregnancy. But because of my age it didn't make sense for us to "wait" - that and the fact that I've never been able to keep weight off that I do manage to lose.
I have gained 14 lbs so far. I plan to breastfeed and hope I lose more than that after the baby. I also was on fertility drugs and they make you gain too.
I haven't had any complications at all. Although, I do wish I were able to buy all those cute clothes, and I think I would have felt the baby sooner, and seen my preggo belly sooner, had I been thinner. Oh well...
QUit the smoking first!!

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
I am bigger than the other ladies and with my first pg I gained 18lbs. With my second, I gained 35lbs. I'm 3 weeks pp and have lost 30lbs. I had absolutely no major issues with either of my pg.

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
I was a 18/20 pre pregnancy. While pregnant I gained 9lbs total. Now, a little over 2 weeks later I have lost 19lbs. So I am 10 lbs below my pre-preggo weight. I had wanted to lose some before getting pregnant but then we decided not to wait anymore. I am not breastfeeding and think my metabolism has sped up. My dr. said it is common and I hope it lasts!!!

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
I had a huge problem losing weight after back surgery a little over a year ago and as a result, my weight starting creeping up from inactivity. Then, when I tried to lose weight for our wedding, I couldn't, my metabolism was a hault. So now I am plus size AGAIN and I haven't had any problems. The doc says to gain 15-25 lb. and no more than that.
As far as cute maternity clothes, I am finding it a little challenging because Motherhood plus size section in Manhasset is under construction BUT after this week they say it is up and running!
Good luck with quitting smoking!

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
VERY overweight here and I was fine being pregnant. I gained more than I would have liked but I was OK with that too. I loved being pregnant. Overall I felt good, BP got somewhat high at the end but they didnt' feel that was weight related. I just think at the very end it's hard to carry the baby plus yourself around day in and day out. My suggestion is start an exercise routine now and stick with it while pregnant. That was my biggest regret that I plan to change next time around.

Re: Question for Plus Sized Moms-to-be
I too have packed on the lbs since my wedding - not that I was skinny then. I was pretty concerned about my weight but my doctor made me feel a lot better about it. She was pretty cool and said that fat people had healthy babies everyday.
I was pretty sure she would not want me to gain more than 15lbs, but she said to stay in the 15-25 range. But she also said that if I didn't gain any weight and as long I was eating well, that would be ok.
I am 14 weeks so far and I am negative like 3 lbs. I am really trying by best not to gain a lot. I am already disgusted with how I look, and I know it will only get worse after I give birth so I am trying to eat very well.
Good luck!
ETA: I have gotten some really cute maternity clothes at Land Bryant and JCPenney.
