Question for someone who knows about primary and secondary insurance policies...
I have a crappy insurance plan through school. I do not pay for it and cannot opt out of it. I have never listed it as either a primary or secondary insurance for any doctor visit or anything else.
I have been using my husband's insurance plan which is a great plan and has really good coverage.
Do I really need to start listing my other insurance as my primary insurance? Will this affect the really good coverage I have been getting through my husband's insurance?
I am just afraid of listing mine and being denied coverage of something or having some mistake happen and getting stuck with a bill. I don't know if this makes any sense at all.
Any insight into this would be great - thanks!

If it's Medicaid, they should be the secondary payer.

It's not medicaid. It's an insurance company called POMCO.

Re: Question for someone who knows about primary and secondary insurance policies...
I had my insurance before DH and I were married and before he got his current job.
When he got his current job, we put me on the plan as my secondary insurance.
When DS was born, I also was let go from my job and my primary insurance denied my L&D bill.
Luckily my secondary insurance got it taken care of (and is now my primary insurance)
IIRC, if you have two, it goes through the first, and if it gets denied then it goes to the secondary

It's through school like you are a student? You should be able to opt out of it as long as you provide the school with proof of other insurance. I was able to when I was in grad school.

I don't pay for it and they won't let me opt out of it. The grad school provides this insurance for me. I have never used it once and never had a problem getting coverage through my husband's insurance.
I avoid filling out the coordination of benefits papers I get from his insurance company. I am just wondering if I should add this and start using this insurance

Do you think the secondary will always pick it up though?

Three years ago mine did, and it was my entire $13k L&D bill

See this is what I'm afraid of. I am having a C-section on Monday and I know DH's insurance covers it in full - no co-pay, deductable or anything. I don't want to mess with a good thing

your secondary insurance may start denying claims stating they need you to complete the coordination of benefits paper. (i do coordination of benefits for a medical facility)

Re: Question for someone who knows about primary and secondary insurance policies...
Yes you have to list that one as primary and if claims don't go through as primary , it could really screw things up in the long run.
But as others said. A claim will go through that insurance, and then the go through the secondary to pick up the remainder.
Just make sure the primary has ALL the info on the secondary and vice versa.
eta- You really need to correct this b/c if your husbands insurance finds out their is a primary insurance that you didn't mention, they can and will go back and reprocess all your claims and deny them "submit to primary" ....and your PRIMARY insurance will fight it's been too long to pay them. This could get a bit out of control. I used to work in insurance, and we did that all the time, found out someone had primary insurance, and we had to go back and deny all their claims we had paid already.
We usually were able to just update it from WHEN we got the new coordination of benefits. So I doubt they will go back. YOu may end up paying even less on bills. Many will process secondary claims and include a copay that the 1st may have charged.
The secondary will ALWAYS pick it up. Its still your same coverage.

I agree with this. I worked in patient accounts for a big hospital in the city & coordination of benefits always ended up being a big nightmare for us & the patient.
Definately, have it updated when you can.

Re: Question for someone who knows about primary and secondary insurance policies...
I have two insurances, the first is through DH job and it's terrible and expensive so I had to get a secondary insurance because I'm pregnant and the bills are so high and this is what they told me at Southside when they were taking my insurance info... that whatever spouses birthday comes first, that that is the primary insurance. Not year, but date. So I am 4 years older than DH but since his birthday is in January and mine is in June, his birthday is first so that means that his insurance is my primary so they bill that first then bill the other second. That makes NO sense to me but that is what the lady taking my insurance info at Southside told me... AND they looked at me like I had two heads when I told them I had two insurances they said they have never heard of this before and are surprised doctors will take me having two insurances.
