Re: Question for the Catholics

In the American Catholic Church, it is usually just the bread at First COmmunion. However, many other Churches around the world do both the bread and the wine for a first communicant. Once you've received communion however, you can receive the wine regardless of your age. As a Eucharistic minister, I've had children come to me for the cup. it's rare, but it happens.

Re: Question for the Catholics

I only recieved bread at my first communion...and never wine, even at confirmation.
I still don't do the wine, partly because there was no wine for so long and partly because it kind of grosses me out.

We had bread & wine at my first communion, but it was completely up to us whether or not we wanted to receive the wine. My aunt was the Eucharistic minister, and I still skipped it. Chat Icon I skip it to this day.

Re: Question for the Catholics

We had both bread and wine. I still take Communion in both forms, unless I am sick and then I don't take the wine.

Re: Question for the Catholics

I only ever had bread, but the wine was always an option. I finally tried the wine at a family mass last year (there were 60 of us, but it was all DH's family). I always wondered what it tasted like; it just tastes like red wine.

The wine thing skeeves me out.

It skeeves me out that some people have the host placed right in their mouths. Ew! I don't want the priest touching someone's tongue by accident and then placing bread in my hand. Ew.

i am a Eucharistic Minister and TRUST me, it is rare to actually touch the person's tongue when you're giving out the communion for those that to choose to receive that way. Also, on the rare occasion where that has happened to me, the tongue hits the top of my fingers, not the bottom which is where i pick up the hosts. trust me, it's a lot more gross for us than you! ;) you have nothing to worry about! and why does the wine "skeeve" you out?

Interesting... Thanks.

About the wine... I just don't like the idea of sharing the chalis with everyone. I wouldn't kiss ransom stangers on the lips, kinda the same thing IMO.

Okay, that makes sense. The Eucharistic Ministers do rotate the cup so that it is not being sipped from the same spot and we do wipe with a fresh cloth after each use, but i suppose it's not fool-proof.

Re: Question for the Catholics

We were offered both but I only took the host bc I didn't want to spill wine on my communion dress. I WILL NEVER FORGET the look on my mother's face when I sat back down in the pew. You would have thought that I stripped down to my undies on the altar - she was so horrified and just kept muttering "not even on your COMMUNION DAY?!" in Italian.

I am the shame of my family. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Question for the Catholics

I wasn't offered wine for Communion or Confirmation. I am old, however, and the wine wasn't offered at regular Sunday masses until after I was confirmed. Chat Icon
