Question for the elementary teachers
Do you count spelling? Or have you guys given up because of all the spelling waived kids???
I am curious. My students keep telling me that spelling didn't count in elementary school and based on the way that they spell I have to say I believe them AND if I didn't know better, I would have thought half of them are dyslexic because they can't spell???
If you have given up counting spelling, may I ask why??
Or is it just my district?
Up this post doesn't come across as rude I am just trying to figure this out.

Re: Question for the elementary teachers
personally, i didn't give spelling tests. I also taught SC Sped- and I found that it frustrated them, stressed them out, and gave them alot of anxiety.
Depending on your kids- maybe assess their DECODING with CVC words, sight words. As far as spelling you will see how they do in their writing.
I amnot sure what district you are in but I think having a word wall is a big part of an elementary classroom.

Re: Question for the elementary teachers
absolutely!! i don't know any teacher that doesn't.
we stress phonics principles so children can learn how to encode words and get a better grasp on the English language
those kids are full of it!

Re: Question for the elementary teachers
do you teach in NYC?
I teach 1st grade in NYC and while we want the kids to spell everything correctly - we rarely correct them or tell them how to spell words. We encourage them to use their stragies to figure out the word (besides the words on the word wall)
I think this is dumb but it was TC, i want to talk to our Literacy Coach (now that we arent stuck on TC anymore) if we can start correcting spelling. we keep letting our kids spell how it sounds (using all the strategies we taught them) so they just keep spelling it wrong - because they dont know the right way because we dont tell them. If we start showing them how its spelt they will begin to learn it the right way.

Re: Question for the elementary teachers
I teach 1st grade in nyc. I give spelling tests everyweek. the words are usually word families with a few sight words. I stress inventive spelling, esp. in the beginning months. I do expect them to spell the sight words on the word wall correctly and tell them to double check themselves.

Re: Question for the elementary teachers
At this point is 1st grade I only stress spelling words correctly if they are around the room (meaning if they can see it on a wall, chart, etc.) they should use it to help them spell it correctly. As the year progresses I focus on it more. Since it's so early in the year though, I am just trying to get them comfortable with writing in general so inventive spelling is all I ask for.

The parents told me also that spelling didn't count in elementary school . I said sorry this is Spanish class and spelling counts!!!

Oh I agree and believe me it's counting but they can't spell. They do not even know how to study spelling. We are not allowed to give straight spelling quizzes because of the spelling waived kids, but we of course can give vocabulary quizzes and count spelling. It's awful This is some examples of Buenos días that I got
guenos dease burnos deis buuios diás grenos déas
It's going to be a long year.

Re: Question for the elementary teachers
i totally do spelling and i have profoudnly learning disabled children. the only time i have NOT done spelling with my kids is if they are receiving Wilson services and that is a very set program... each step is a certain phonic rule and if i am jumping around with a different rule each week, it screws them up.
i introduce the list on Mondays... i teach the "rule" and we review the pattern in the words. they complete a page in their spelling book. then each ngiht that week they complete another page in the unit for HW with a test on Friday.
I have a system for "no excuse words" and words that they've misspelled from the tests.... you can FM if you want info. on that.

Re: Question for the elementary teachers
Yes, well the state does. On the state exam spelling doesn't count as long as a native speaker with LIMITED knowledge of English would be able to figure it out. Other than the buuios diás I don't think any NATIVE would know W T F these kids are saying. But we hold our kids to a much higher standard. So needless to say my first quiz of the year, where I normally do not have any grades under 85 I had 12 out of 42 kids fail, most of which has to do with spelling!!!
This is going to be a HUGE HUGE HUGE issue when we get into conjugation and adjective agreement.
