Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
My son broke his right collarbone Saturday during his school LAX practice. As luck would have it, the poor kid is also right handed and is in a sling. He really is at a loss at the moment for taking notes. When he asked his teachers for advice they basically told him to figure it out. Is that common practice, or could they have been accomodating in some way.
I know all teachers have alot on their plate, but I am just trying to help my son
TIA

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
I use powerpoints so I give them a print out or if it is notes that they have to write I have carbon paper. The students will ask another student to make a copy. I have also had students go to the library and make copies of another students work. As for tests my one student that has a broken arm will try his best. I haven't had any problems with this!

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
Thank you for your suggestions, I know he is a freshman and not a baby but the teachers pretty much dismissed him.
He is also an honors student and is afraid of jeopardizing his grades

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
I am not a HS teacher, but I broke my arm when I was younger. The teacher had someone else (with neat handwriting) use carbon paper, and just give me the copy. Maybe if your son can find someone he trusts, and knows takes good notes to do this for him, that would be great.
And if the teacher doesnt agree with this (even though I don't see why she wouldnt) you could just borrow the kids notes and copy them on a copy machine. Good luck to your son!

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
I would pair him up with a kid who takes very thorough notes and send them to use the copy machine in the library so he can get a copy of the notes. HE wouldn't have to pay the normal fee per page for the copies.

Buy him carbon paper and have him ask a friend to take notes for him.

Can he use a tape recorder? My assistant used to do that when she had to take minutes at meetings so she didn't miss anything (and so she could tune out )

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
If he doesnt feel comfortable asking a student on his own, the teacher should definitely help out in this, at the very least asking a student for him.
I hope he gets better quick !

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
she should help out where she can or atleast offer some suggestions...he can ask someone to take notes for him, tape recorder would work too, maybe if there is an aide in the classroom they can take the notes-I have seen this happen in my school-(a MS)

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
i agree with other posters about the carbon paper - students cannot be relied on to make copies of their notes - using the carbon paper lets them get the notes right there and then

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
As a parent, I would personally go see each teacher who wouldnt not help in any way- that would make me so mad! Its not as if he's slacking off- he cant write!
They should have paired him up themselves with a student. I would also ask to bring in a tape recorder and transcribe the notes.

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
He is entitled to a copy fo the notes due to his injury. I know because I have done this for my students. If he needs to take a test he should also have a scribe who can write for him. All his teachers should provide this for him, if not I would contact the assistant principal or the chair in the department he is having trouble with. I hope he feels better!

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
I am a high school special education teacher and I have a lot of students that are normally entitled to a copy of the notes. I usually type my notes so I print out an extra copy. Or sometimes I have another student use the carbon paper. The school should have some carbon paper.
But I agree with another poster, that due to the injury the school can create a temporary 504 plan for him entitling him a copy of the notes until he is healed.
Good luck and if I were you, I would call the school, possibly the guidance counselor or nurse.

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
I give one of the students who has nice handwriting and takes good notes carbon copy paper for the notes.
Then as far as hw I let them make it up when they are better. As long as it is before the qtr ends. If they didnt heal and the qtr is ending I would give them an incomplete until he completes the assignments or test

Buy him carbon paper and have him ask a friend to take notes for him.
This is a great idea. I use this for my students frequently.
Technically, his needs should be met for this temporary situation, and you should speak with guidance to arrange this. What happens when he has exams? Guidance should be able to arrange to have his needs met. Check into this!
Good luck!

Re: Question for the HS teachers - from a parent
Thank you everyone, I initially did call guidance and they were less than helpful. I left a message this morning for his counselor.
