Question for those of you who took sick days (with pay) for maternity leave...
I'm a teacher and I have enough sick days to take me through the end of the school year (I'm due the first week of March).
I asked my dr today if she'd write me a note to allow me to be paid with sick days and she said she would. However, she wasn't too helpful in giving me suggestions as to what condition would be listed in the note(s). She said it's difficult to find a medical excuse related to pregnancy/childbirth that would last for 3 months (after my 6 weeks).
She mentioned post partum, but didn't know if I'd want that in my file. Any suggestions from any of you that may have been in this position? If your doctor wrote a note (or notes) to help keep you out, would you mind sharing what the condition was? I desperately need ideas...thank you so much!!!

Re: Question for those of you who took sick days (with pay) for maternity leave...
you don't need to write in a condition... you apply for disability leave (standard NYS disability w/o pay), and then you receive pay by using sick days... legally, disability pay doesn't kick-in until you have used up your sick days... so you can just keep munching them up.
legally, all new moms are 'disabled' according to NYS.... so there's no need to come-up with an explanation
HTH!

I think she means AFTER the 6 to 8 weeks disability allows...

If you have a c-section, the doctor can say you're having complications with healing (just nothing that can be "proved" with a medical test).

Exactly...what do I write after the 6-8 weeks as a medical excuse so I can use my sick days while I'm on leave?

My SIL is also a teacher and I believe she used PPD. She had tenure though, not sure if that made a difference on why she didn't care if that went on her file????

You can use back pain (especially if you had an epi)
If you are breastfeeding, that is another option. (complications with pumping/supply)
Do you have a good HR person? They could also help you.
My district doesnt even really need a reason.. just a note from the Dr saying XXX is not cleared to return to work until XXX.

I know with my district, they didn't ask for a reason. I just took the 8 weeks (I had a c section) and then was able to cover the rest with my sick days. I also got my summer pay b/c I worked for most of the year. I do think the last check was a little less though. HTH.

I don't thinkl you need a reason. I work for the DOE, I'm an EA and I've just been using my days.

How did you arrange for this? I've been told I need to submit a letter after my 6-8 weeks are up to explain why I'm using my sick days. Did you have to submit a formal letter? Thank you!

Re: Question for those of you who took sick days (with pay) for maternity leave...
No one has said anything to me. I spoke to my payroll person a month after baby was born to put him on my health insurance. She didn't mention anything. I know that you need to apply for maternity leave if you are planning to take leave without pay.
I had a c-section so I can always ask my doctor, but I think you are fine as long as you are just using your sick days.

Re: Question for those of you who took sick days (with pay) for maternity leave...
who is your dr. mine looked at me like I was asking for blood from a stone when I asked her write me beyond my condition.
I personally did not want to try to go the PPD route as I am a counselor and didn't want that to impact my job/my tenure, etc.
