Re: Question for those that consider themselves "laid back"
I'm SO laid back it's not even funny. My kids have ONLY been to the Dr for well checks (ok--DD went for a rash/redness in her private parts and a stomach virus got her in the ER in 2007).
They've never been truly ill aside from colds. My house has dog hair, dust bunnies, and they run around outside with no shoes on sometimes. I try to resolve the issue without going to the Dr and when it's a cold, we treat the symptoms....I only medicate at night so they can get the rest they need. Yes, I've given motrin for more than 5 nights in a row for teething.
They fall down....we get them right back up-- most of the time they don't seem to mind a scratch or a bump. DD fell once where she bit her lip and
I've only called the Ped a few times which was taken care of over the phone.
My best friend is a germ freak AND a clean freak....her kids are sick ALL THE TIME. And she runs to the Dr all the time.

Re: Question for those that consider themselves "laid back"
mmm, to answer your question, yes, I believe at least a portion of the people who are more rigid about the rules look down on those who are not, becuase whether they'll admit it or not, they believe the others are being reckless.
I fit in neither category.... becuase I challenge the rules (and the diagnostic tests) and come to my own conclusions. It's the scientist in me.
sooo, as a result, a physician will make a blanket statement 'no alcohol at all' and being a drug abuse researcher who has heard a dozen + talks about fetal alcohol syndrome I know that this rule is a wee bit overboard... becuase it takes A LOT of alcohol to affect a fetus.
Also, the listeria thing is also a bit hyped. It presumes your source of food is not properly storing their coldcuts. Well, IMO, in the US, yeah, I'll be cautious and re-heat my ham, but in EUROPE?? nope, their meat is fresh. It's not even in the same ballpark as US coldcuts.
On the flip side, there are rules I adhere to just becuase I'm neurotic (no alcohol), or becuase I agree with it: no artificial sweeteners, no caffeinel.
Then there are additional rules that the Dr's don't press but I know is best, so I do it anyway! Take DHA (400mg, not 100 or 200... I know that preggo's need at least 300/day, it's just not standardized in the medical community yet)
I've taken no OTC medications.... even tylenol. I haven't been challenged with real chronic pathological pain, and therefore will fight off the minor pains au natural.
No processed / fake foods. No nitrites, nitrates, preservatives, artificial flavors, or artificial colors. Food coloring is ESPECIALLY bad..... (sorry red velvet cake lovers) as for nitrites / nitrates, that knocks out most american coldcuts and sausages! Processed meat is baaaad.
Lots of water... MUCH more than my Dr. recommends as a minimum. And not bottled water (in BPA containers!)
Limit omega 6 fatty acids (soybean oil, safflower oil....) it negates the omega 3 supplement.
As you can tell, as a patient, I am a PITA. But, on the flipside, it's not random thoughts, rather all of my conclusions are well researched

Re: Question for those that consider themselves "laid back"
every person is different so no one can judge...
My sister was laid back, ate what she wanted, even had an occasional coctail drink... 2 healthy babies, no losses...
Me- following all those do not eat lists etc.... 2 losses, hoping this one sticks
what you can tell them is "man plans god laughs"- do what you feel most comfortable doing

Re: Question for those that consider themselves "laid back"
To answer your question, yes, I'm sure *some* of the worriers look down on the more laid-back women, like myself. My answer to that is, I don't really care. I personally have very little tolerance for whiny pregnant women (all pg women are allowed to complain, I'm referring to the super whiny ones) so to each his own in that sense.
I'm fairly laid back but I can sit next to my more cautious pg SIL and drink my 2nd cup of coffee while she refuses a second cup of tea and not roll my eyes at her and she won't look down on me.
I don't think most people see it as you not caring unless you are really reckless (like doing drugs).
Besides, the neurotic preggos are the ones that wind up with the cranky babies!
KIDDING!! I kid, I kid...

I really don't think it is fair to say someone who possibly has personal reasons for being cautious, and follows guidelines that are recommended by drs is neurotic (a negative term), as it's equally not fair to say that someone who doesn't follow guidelines automatically doesn't care (which was the OPs question). Just an observation.

Re: Question for those that consider themselves "laid back"
I worry about things that are commonplace to worry about from time to time.
However, I am also too busy to totally get into every little thing like some people do. I am also clueless about a lot of things, and also have the attitude that I will deal with it all, when the time comes.
I know people who are totally baby 24/7 researching everything from the latest gadgets to keeping up with the top cartoons for kids. I really could care less about that kind of stuff at this point.
I am sure that will change with time. For now, I prefer to live simply and hope that still is the case after is here. I already have enough stress in my life---don't need to add anymore to it!
