Question for those who had a male cat with a blocked urinary tract
How long was your cat on the special food? He had a complete blockage (struvite crystals) about 3-4 months ago. He eats Royal Canin SO dry and Halo Spot's Stew wet. The Royal Canin SO is prescription only and pretty expensive, plus I discovered it is pretty poor nutritionally.
The vet was a little vague on how long he has to eat this Rx food. The blockage seemed to stem from being overweight and super stressed (we had just adopted him and his sister from a rather bad situation). My friend said her sister ( a vet) recommends a completely wet diet, that cats are carnivores and not meant to eat dry food.
He is drinking water regularly (I have 5 water bowls and a water fountain bowl in the house, my husband thinks I'm nuts lol). The wet food is 84% water and grain-free. He is much less stressed and has settled into life with us. He hasn't showed any signs of blockage since.

Re: Question for those who had a male cat with a blocked urinary tract
i'm not sure how long he has to stay on it since we had to put our kitty to sleep (his condition was much worse than it sounds like yours is), but i wanted to let you know that you can get royal canin so online for much cheaper than the vet's price!

Question for those who had a male cat with a blocked urinary tract
I adopted my cat after he had the surgery for a blockage. That was over 7 years ago and I've continually fed him Prescription Hill Science diet C/D. I won't change his food because I'm concerned about him getting crystals again.
I pay about $50 or so for a large bag which is about 18 pounds.

I'm so sorry
We were really lucky we caught it, I just happened to have a sleepless night and caught him posturing in the litter box for about 30 minutes. He didn't make a sound, just sat there.
I don't why I didn't think to look for it online *facepalm*
