question for vegans/veggies - how do you feel...
How do you feel about us regular eaters. What do you call us?
I ask because a few people I know are veggies (sorry can't spell it) and vegan and some were shocked that I cared less what their choices were. I always try to include everyone in my group/meal ect but I don't think it's wrong to eat my steak when I want one.
My good friend through high school became vegan after college. We stayed close friends. We went out for dinner one day and he told the waiter he was vegan and had to have a special meal made (this was years ago) after he was done (i always let him go first because I knew it was a problem, then) I ordered my steak and waiter just stared at me.
I don't get it. I knew the guy before he became vegan. He saw me eat steak before I know he doesn't care that I still do. What's the big deal?
So.
What do you think? What do you call us? Do you have a problem with us eating our meat in front of you? If you do, do you say something or keep quiet? (I wish they'd say something if they had a problem with it) Do you provide heads up if your going somewhere that you have things you can't eat? If not, why not?
To me your choice is yours. I respect it. It is the same to me as food allergies but you choose not to eat things for various reasons. Just give me a heads up and I am sure I can make something that's fine for ya!
ETA: I have been introduced to some GREAT dishes through my vegan/veggie friends and I love to experiment with foods. I never avoid the veggie menu at a restuarant, you'd be surprised at the yummy selection they've got!

I say to each his/her own. Don't knock me for NOT eating meat and I'm fine with you eating meat. Seriously, I won't preach vegetarianism to anyone but if someone asks me about it, I'll answer, but I dislike being ridiculed for it and yes, there are those who do that. Seriously, it's just a choice. As to what I call meat eaters, just that...meat eaters.

Re: question for vegans/veggies - how do you feel...
I eat meat, although at times I keep thinking that I should be a vegetarian based on the way I see animals... but at this point I have not cut it out of my diet.
However, I think this discussion could really pertain to everything. People who drink vs people who don't drink, different religions, those who live "green" vs those who don't care about the environment.... you are always going to find that most people will respect the "others" opinion... but there wll always be people who will shove their opinion down your throat and look at you funny because you don't believe what they do... no matter what it is!!!

Some are grossed out. I found that out the hard way. What I call a lurking Veggie. She didnt tell me she was veggie cause we were all out together in a group and she's a friend of a friend. I thought she'd be a cool person to know and we all hung out for a movie and quick dinner. She didnt tell any of us.
I had my hamburger and she literally turned green and heaved. I tossed my burger (of course, I'm not heartless) and just ate my fries. I was kinda ticked off that I wasted money because she didn't want to 'bother us'.
Oh cause almost puking isn't bothering me at all

I don't call meat eaters anything... I don't think I've had an occasion..maybe "carnivores."
It used to bother me, but it's not so bad. I deal. I can't stand certain things like the smell of pork or bacon.
I am also pretty vocal about veal and won't "let" friends and family eat it.
ETA: I ALWAYS give a heads up that I'm veg. It makes like easier.

When I didnt eat meat , I was ok with people eating it in front of me..I just would occasionally get sick when I smelled it being cooked...Then I got PG and craved meat for a time being...Now I pretty much avoid it again, but not completly...But my SIL whos a vegetarian cooks for us all meat and herself no meat....

Quite honestly, I could care less what anyone else puts in their body. So I'd probably call you Veronica.

Re: question for vegans/veggies - how do you feel...
I'm an omnivore, leaning more towards the carnivore side of it. I'm not ashamed, and I never try to coax a vegetarian/vegan to "come to the dark side". Everyone has their likes/dislikes, and beliefs. I lean towards meat and cheese because it has less effect on my blood sugar than pasta, bread, fruit, and even most vegetables. As a diabetic, I have other things I need to think about, it's not just that I'm cruel to animals. As long as people don't try to convert me, I won't try to convert anyone else.
The less meat that vegetarians eat, the more for me...

Re: question for vegans/veggies - how do you feel...
i was a vegetarian for 9yrs.. now i eat SOME meat.. mostly just chicken and fish though.. and im still very picky about what kind.. it has to be breaded or covered in something so it doesnt taste like meat.. lol..
but anyway, to answer your question- i feel that its your choice.. i dont call meat eaters anything.. and it doesnt bother me if you eat meat near me.. as long as im not eating it and youre not putting it in my face.

I'll probably get bashed for saying this, but honestly, yes, it does bother me when people eat meat...only because I cannot understand how people can eat it when they know the cruelty and agony that animals in slaughterhouses and factory farms endure. Would I ever say anything to you? No. It is a personal choice and like it or not, I deal with it.

Re: question for vegans/veggies - how do you feel...
DH and I always joke that the rest of the meat eating world are "carnivores" but we never say it to anyone directly
It doesn't offend me when someone orders and eats meat in front of me - to feel otherwise I think would be somewhat extreme. I don't think I could function considering all the meals I have with family, friends and co-workers.
But, with that said, I do try to avoid looking at their meal, and if I see a friend or family member tearing into a steak, or eating a hamburger, yes, it makes my stomach turn and totally grosses me out. But, again, I would never say anything.
If we've been invited to a dinner out with friends, or to someone's house for a meal, I usually give them a heads up that we need to find a place that has vegetarian options, or ask that they either prepare something we can eat, or offer to bring something.
For a party or event where there are more people involved, if I know there won't be anything we can eat, we just eat beforehand.

Re: question for vegans/veggies - how do you feel...
I am not grossed out. DH eats meat, and I don't, so I am used to seeing others eat meat. I don't care as long as you don't feel compelled to preach to me about why I should eat meat (I don't preach) and don't stick your food in my face (seems like common sense, but totally has happened)
I will admit to being sad if anyone I am eating with orders veal. DH has given that one up at least. My MIL loves veal - I told her the story of veal once and she could care less. Oh well.

People are too "busy" to really think about it. Everyone assumes our USDA & FDA have our best interests at heart. I eat meat on a very limited basis because I'm not 100% convinced that humans have evolved to a point of not needing meat yet. I believe in more of a locavore style of eating. I raise my own chickens for eggs because I'm appauled at how battery hens are kept & I believe chicken eggs are essential to good health. I would not judge anyone's food choices, but if I can I try to let people know(if they ask) why I eat the way I do.

I'm not at all grossed out and don't judge people by what they eat.
But a big ol' WORD to this:
Posted by TheLorax I will admit to being sad if anyone I am eating with orders veal.

Yes.
Actually I won't let anyone in my family eat veal and when I signed my wedding contract I put in that no veal was to be served.
