Question for winter mommies
I'm due at the end of December, and I'm sooo nervous about being couped up in the house with the baby! I was wondering what you guys did when DC was first born and it was cold outside?
TIA!!!

Re: Question for winter mommies
I had DS in January---granted we didn't go out that much in the beginning, but we went out to BRU & the mall after he was 8 weeks, and then once it wasn't so bitter cold out I would bundle him up good and we went for walks.

Re: Question for winter mommies
I had DS Dec 28th..he was a horrible infant.. colic, crying constantly... It was def cold out but I couldnt stay inside or I would def DIE! So out we went when he was 2 weeks old to the mall, restaurants... etc.. mostly the mall. That was the only time he didnt cry, I used to say if there was a 24 hr mall, I would have been at it at 3 am!! I did not let anyone near him, but I def didnt wait any longer than 2 weeks to venture out. Good luck!!!

Re: Question for winter mommies
DS was born in early December. The first two weeks or so after his birth I was just too knocked out to go anywhere! But after that, I started taking him for walks. We went for one almost every day, unless it was bitterly cold (and it wasn't much last winter).
We did follow our pediatrician's advice and avoided taking him to crowded places for the first two months, so no malls or busy stores. But we walked around the neighborhood. He was colicky also, so I had to get out every day or I would have been bouncing off the walls.

Re: Question for winter mommies
I had DS in the winter and I went out with him to stores once he was 4 weeks and once he was 6 weeks I was at the mall once a week. If you had other children he would be exposed to their germs so I would be cautious but not too worried!

Re: Question for winter mommies
DD was born in the beginning of Dec. Thankfully the winter was mild and we could go for walks with her bundled up. We started taking her to stores (Target, BRU) around 2 weeks and we were constantly around family. We did not go to malls though as per our ped and we did most of our shopping during the week in the mornings (less crowded).
I had this for the carseat and it was a great.

Re: Question for winter mommies
DD was born in Dec. I didnt take her anywhere but to my mothers and the dr. until she was about 11 weeks old. I took her for one walk in January because it reached 60 degrees...dr said not to take her our if colder than that. Honestly it didnt bother me at all. Everything is so new and exciting with a new baby that staying in wasnt bad at all. I was excited to finally take her out, but didnt go crazy.

Re: Question for winter mommies
DD was born Jan. 2/08 (due dec 28th/07) If i really needed to go out normally I took her to the mall or something and walked around there with her (not till she was a few weeks old though...before that I didnt have the energy to leave the house!)

Re: Question for winter mommies
DD was born Dec 28th and when I wasnt crying we went outside for long walks bundled up. That winter it was pretty mild.. I mean bundled up. Probably around 3 weeks i started to do this. I didnt bring DD in ANY stores until after 6 weeks I was too scared of germs.

Re: Question for winter mommies
My DD was born 11/10. And we live in Chicago so it was COLD. The Bundle Me was the best invention for us EVER. I joined a new moms group at the hospital DD was born at and I think that helped save my sanity. Other than that, I took her to Target (there is a parking garage at our Target so we never had to go outside - just went from our garage to Target's) and that was pretty much it. I won't lie, it was a looonnngggg winter. I had cabin fever BIG TIME. But DD was a big crier and I was afraid to take her anywhere. I could handle the cying much better at home. The mall is a great idea though. On the flip side of the cabin fever, some days it was nice to be all cozy & warm inside with my baby girl. And when she did nap I came on LIF, which also saved my sanity.
Good luck!! It won't be so bad.

Re: Question for winter mommies
DS was born Jan. 15th. It took me about a good week or two to feel comfy again (c section) and get into some sort of routine, especially when DH went back to work. The Bundle Me is the best invention! Even if it was just a walk around the block, I felt SO much better. DS was/is a GREAT baby, but, just to get out did wonders. I'd go to my parents house too. I didn't take him out in public places until he was 6 weeks.

Re: Question for winter mommies
I had DD on Jan 24th and we went out after 2 weeks when my doc said I could drive after my c-section. We went to the mall, babies r us, wal-mart, target...etc. I couldn't stay cooped up in the house.

Same here.. after I had DD we didnt go that many places and so many people came to visit that I didnt mind being home.
But March brings some nice weather, thats when I started going out for walks.. and we took DD to Florida then also

Re: Question for winter mommies
The best advice I got was from another winter mom. She told me to go out most days for a little while, and I swear it did wonders for my mood (and often calmed my colicky baby).
Take your baby for some walks (stores, up to you and your doctor). I don't know where this myth that cold air is bad for you comes from, but if you dress DC warmly (but not too too warm) he/she will be fine.

Re: Question for winter mommies
I had DD in the beginning of December. Our ped was very specific with DH and told him he had to talke me out of the house but to be smart about it. I *think* we went out to dinner when she was only 2 weeks old. We went after 8 PM on a Sunday when the place was less crowded. She was 3 weeks old on Christmas Day and we had to take her out. Again, our ped told us it was OK, just to be smart about it. Her first trip to the mall she was 10 weeks.
