Question on unemployment
Here's my situation:
I have been temping since August of last year, and my assignment is over as of August 1st. If the agency can't come up with another assignment, can I collect unemployment? Exactly how does the unemolpyment thing work if you're temping, vs a full time job that lays you off?
Also, I work in the city but live in Suffolk county, do I apply here in the city, or at home?
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: Question on unemployment
You should definitely review whatever paperwork you signed with the agency to see if you are eligible for unemployment and under what circumstances.
I would think that the agency would not provide you with unemployment since you are not necessarily their employee but rather a client. I can't help but think that they would avoid those relationships otherwise they would have a great liability on their hands.
If you find that you are eligible...definitely check out this site: NYS Unemployment
ETA: Definitely investigate! I found this on the website:
"Employment is any service performed under a contract of hire, either written or oral. An employee is a worker who performs services for compensation under the supervision, direction and control of an employer. Unless specifically excluded by law, all employment performed for a liable employer is covered whether it is on a part-time, full-time, temporary, seasonal, or casual basis. Employees may perform services on or off the employer's premises or in their own homes."

Re: Question on unemployment
yes, you can apply for unemployment. Go on to NYS Dept of Labor and file online. There is a one week waiting period. I tempted for a while and did this in between jobs.

Re: Question on unemployment
Definitely apply. I was in the same exact situation and received unemployment without a problem. However, I did have to check in with my agency every week to see if they had anything for me...

Re: Question on unemployment
If you work for an agency, you would qualify for unemployment. You would apply in the county of your residence (Suffolk).
