Question on wood floors - why don't people get wider planks?
I honestly like the 5" wide planks and said to my mom i never see them in homes. She thinks "something must be wrong then"
Any opinions? We are thinking iof our wood floors are shot when we finally rip up our this icky rug in the spring that we will put new wood floors down and splurge on them but i like the wide planks.

I love them wider but my DH vetoed it when we were choosing ours - he thought it looked like laminate flooring. We ended up with 3" brazilian cherry as a compromise and have gotten so many compliments, so I can't really complain.

i like them too. in my old house, we had flooring (that was subflooring, unbeknownst to us) that were wider planks than what you see all over...
more feedback please!

I love the look of the wider planks. When we were looking at flooring we were told not to go over 3". I think the reason was because the bigger the plank the more likely the floor is to be uneven. Not sure if that was the exact reason, but something along those lines.

I would imagine expense is the biggest reason.

I would also think it's a strength thing. Like 3 planks together are stronger than 1 on its own.

Strictly style preference and cost issue.
I LOVE wide plank flooring reminiscent of traditional old homes. If I was restoring an old home that is the way I'd go.
If you google wide plank flooring there are many articles on the history and companies who specialize in true wide plank lumber.

MY ILs have wide planks (bamboo flooring) and I think it looks amazing. That's definitely what I will do when we re-do our floors.

I love them too but our house already had hardwood flooring under the carpets that was not wide planks, so we just refinished what we had.

Re: Question on wood floors - why don't people get wider planks?
We did our laminate flooring in the wide planks and we love it, but I don't think the wide planks always look like laminate flooring. If we ever have to redo our floors upstairs, that are hardwood, and if we had the money, I would do hardwood wide planks. I really love the look.

My sister has them in her house in CT and they look great! I believe they're more expensive though.

Re: Question on wood floors - why don't people get wider planks?
i know that for super dense, exotic hardwoods (like brazilian teak, aka cumaru, which we have) wider planks are an issue b/c these woods are more sensitive to humidity changes, and thus more prone to cupping and crowning than north american hardwoods are. and cupping and crowning are much more noticeable with wider planks.

WOW! good point. this doesn't apply, however, to laminate, correct? or does laminate "breathe" too?

well, my understanding is that it's possible with laminate, but very unlikely. this is largely b/c laminate is made of HDF, so it doesn't have a grain. the grain direction of typical hardwood floor planks makes them more prone to humidity-related shape changes than HDF. laminate will still expand and contract b/c it is made of wood material, but it is generally considered "dimensionally stable" and will be more likely to expand and contract uniformly.

Re: Question on wood floors - why don't people get wider planks?
I have wide plank floors that are over 150 years old and have never warped. I am looking for wide boards to put in an extension I'm building because I love the look.
