questions for moms who put cereal in the bottle
the ped said we could start to give DS oatmeal in his bottle to help with reflux - a tsp per 4 oz - DS is 2 months old - and I'm nervous and need some advice
first, did you put it in every bottle, or just 1 per day?
second, was it harder for the baby to suck it through the nipple ? (since it's thicker)
third, did this actually help anyone's baby that had reflux?
TIA!

I was told never to put it in the bottle, due to possibilty of choking.

why would they choke if from the bottle, but not if fed from a spoon?

Mix the cereal really well. It should be thin enough to get through the niple. If not try the next level up. I would put it in every bottle for the reflux.
My son didn't have reflux but my friend swears by it.
Good luck.

I put cereal in Christopher's bottles for reflux, and yes you put it in every bottle. You may have to get a few sizes up on the nipples. I use Dr. Brown's and use the Y shaped nipple

First of all I don't understand why someone would give you thier opinion on putting cereal in the bottle or not, since your ped told you to do it to help with reflux.
To answer the question - my ped had us putting cereal in the bottle to help with spitting up and it worked wonders. After the first bottle there was a noticable difference. I put it in every bottle and used Dr Brown's Y cut nipple also.

Re: questions for moms who put cereal in the bottle
thanks for all your responses - can I ask some follow up questions?
first, did you notice that your child gained a lot more weight since you were putting it in every bottle?
second - I have Dr. Browns bottles, but how do I know if they are "Y" cut nipples? does Dr. Browns come with a different type of nipple than "Y"?

Dr Brown's has 4 differnt types, Level 1, 2, 3 and Y cut. You can buy them seperately.
When we added the cereal he at first didn't drink as much.

I am sure this has more to do with other feeding habits besides just cereal. Cereal in the bottle could not make a child tremendous.
Also if a baby is suffereing from reflux, he is not getting all of the nutrients and calories he should be since he is spitting up so much. If the cereal keeps more formula down, it will in turn give him more calories per day.

Re: questions for moms who put cereal in the bottle
When I was giving Ali cereal - she was gaining weight normally cause she started sleeping through the night and no longer needed that last bottle.
I bought the newborn gift set - in the was the Y nipples - it says it on them. I am sure they can be bought in the store seperately
Ali didn't have reflux though, so I am not sure if the weight gain would be different, cause you would be giving it in every bottle

Re: questions for moms who put cereal in the bottle
it is only 60 or 70 calories per 1/4 of a cup ...if I remember correctly so it can be a bit of a calorie boost but not much if you are only putting a teaspoon per ounce
my ds is average weight but there was a point where he was not gaining weight so we continued with the cereal even as he switched to milk

Actually it was what made him gain so much weight. They had to stop it in every bottle.

Re: questions for moms who put cereal in the bottle
I used it for dd's reflux too and it helped a lot.
She did not get big and fat from it, and I put it in every bottle.
I found the y cut nipples and the 2 nipples were too fast for her at 2 months old so we used a fork to make the level 1 a little bigger, but not as big as the 2.

Re: questions for moms who put cereal in the bottle
I put it in every bottle and they did great. I got the Y nipples at BRU for the Dr. Brown's. At 6 months my babies weigh 15lbs 2 oz and 14lbs 4 ozs - not overly big. (They weighed 4-11 and 4-2 at birth).

Re: questions for moms who put cereal in the bottle
My ped told me the same thing. It really helped DS's reflux. He hasn't gained that much weight that it is abnormal. I didn't use the Y nipples, I just moved him from a 1 to a 2.
