Questions for moms who want to breastfeed
I plan on breastfeeding and see how it goes. So I was even going to just rent a pump at first.
I did not really plan on joining any "association" or consulting a lactation consultant.
I thought I would "Know-it-all" from the hospital, books and other classes.
But I went to the BRU class on breastfeeding and they are talking about calling the lactation consultant when you have questions.
I am hearing of "nightmare" stories of lactation consultant making you feel guilty if you don't breastfeed. More like breastfeeding nazis.
To top that, I am assuming this is NOT FREE.
What is everybody else doing? Plan on doing?

Re: Questions for moms who want to breastfeed
I bought the AAP New Mothers' Guide to Breastfeeding, and it seems like a good reference. So that's what I am going to use.
I am leery of using a consultant for the same reason. My most important asthma med is "category 3", which means that no studies have been done about breastfeeding safety. It seems like my only option will be going off it while I BF, and I don't know how long I'll be able to do that. So I am going to do my best, but I don't want anyone pressuring me either.

Re: Questions for moms who want to breastfeed
I took the class at BRU Massapequa and the instructor didn't BF her first 2 so she said she is not a Nazi by any means. I hope that between this class, instinct, and the LC at the hospital, and my sister who is a nurse being with me, it will all work out. If not, I will call an LC.
Expensive? Probably -- but I doubt more so than 6 months of formula!!

Well, you can avoid this by getting referrals from other moms. But anyhow, if you are hiring someone to help you breastfeed, wouldn't you want them to be pushing you a bit? Its so tempting to throw in the towel...
I took classes, read books, and got help from nurses at the hospital. I still needed a lot of support from La Leche and lactation consultants. It just doesn't come naturally for most people -- breastfeeding is hard, hard work -- but so worth the effort. My OB/GYN had a lactation consultant in her office (lots of pediatricians do too) and I didn't have to pay extra. Next time I plan to pay to have someone that comes highly recommended work with me at home.

Re: Questions for moms who want to breastfeed
I plan on breastfeeding as I did with my first. To tell you the truth, it came very easy to me. I never had any questions that couldn't be answered by a friend that had already breastfed. I personally would just take advice from moms who have already done it, because of the lactation consultants in the hospital I delivered, only half of them even had kids, so how do they know what it feel like anyways?

I am going to "wing it" with the knowledge from books and the hospital after delivery.

Re: Questions for moms who want to breastfeed
I am taking a breastfeeding class at the hospital that consists of 2 classes that last 2.5 hours each. It costs $50 and with the certification you can contact the lactation consultant at any time free of charge, plus if she is available she will come to the hospital to help you herself when the baby is born because she is an RN there.

Can you contact her "after" you delivered?
