Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
I pointed out to Clover's doctor at her 1 month visit today how I thought something was up with her tongue.
How bad was your child's case? What age did you notice/take action? How were they eating?

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
doc said his case wasn't bad but needed to be fixed at 6 months. It has not effected his eating other than having trouble breastfeeding. So I had to bottlefeed him breastmilk in the beginning.
We saw a ped ENT and he said that the intitial concern is eating which my son clearly doesn' t have a problem with (he's 4 months and 18 lbs). Then they would be concerned with speech impediments which is why we're doing it at 6 months. If it were up to me I would have had it done already but doc didn't like to do it early because they will put him out for the procedure.
HTH.

Ped told me at the hospital so I had no clue except that she told me and she snipped it right there same day as delivery.

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
I was told when my ped came to the hospital and had it snipped at 2 months.
ETA: my sons case was pretty severe and needed to be taken care of. He was eating fine. I didn't want to wait until he was older. And, I have to say - it was complete torture and would def. not want to do that to an older baby. The earlier you can get it done - the better IMO!

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
Well, we share the same ped... the most revered Dr. C
He noticed it at DD's first visit at one week old (she was in the NICU for her first week and under the care of a ped at MS Manhasset) and referred us to Dr. Coronetta, also Huntington Medical Group... same building. He is an ENT, that specializes in pediatric and is a board certified plastic surgeon as well. We had it done when she was 2 months old... quick snip in the office. They make you wait outside in the waiting room. DD screamed (I snuck back in and hhung around the hallway) but I think it was more because she was in unfamiliar suroundings being held by someone she didn't know.
It was bloodless, she was taking the bottle a few minutes later and completely calmed down.
I'd get it done sooner rather than later.

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
Noah has what looked to me like a really small tongue. He wasn't physically able to latch on, so I pumped for a looooong time. My dad has the same kind of tongue tie that Noah has. Also, the flap of skin under his top lip was really big and went all the way down to the top of his gums.
The initial snip was traumatic for a minute or two, but he was taking the bottle minutes afterwards and it made a big difference to the size of his tongue.

I don't know how serious hers is. Afterall, she had been to the doctors for her thrush early on so they saw her mouth and didn't say anything then. I'm the one who pointed it out to Dr. Cavanagh. I guess I will discuss with him next month.

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
We never had to get DSs snipped. Our peditrician told us that he could very well outgrow it. It was never a problem while we fed him. So, far his speech is fine. But, he doesn't have a big vocabulary yet sinced he's only 20 months. It also doesn't look as bad as it did when he was little.
So, my guess would be that if you noticed it and the doctor hasn't already seemed concerned, that maybe she will outgrow it too!

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
jonah seems to be a little tongue-tied, but the ped decided against snipping it because it hasn't affected his ability to latch onto the breast at all. he said that he will probably outgrow it, so nothing to do for now.
i hope he doesn't have to have a painful procedure later on...

If the doctor tells you to do it get it done sooner than later. I had mine snipped a few years ago. I wish my mom would have noticed it at birth.

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
My nephew had it & we snipped at 1 week old. He was having difficulty drinking his bottle & then developed thrush. Luckily he is fine now (10 weeks old)

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
My son was tongue tied and I honestly didn't even know what that was until he was 2 years old, in Speech Therapy through EI and the ST mentioned it. Looking back he never would take a paci and would only drink from a square nipple.
He was snipped at around 2.5 years old. I think it severely impacted his ability to use his tongue properly to speak. It's a little annoying that his ped. never said anything.

Was it a really horrible procedure? I am curious...I wondered what it felt like for Noah when I had it done!

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
we had DS snipped at 2 weeks old. his tongue-tie was "moderate to severe." he was not able to breastfeed and i really wanted to BF him so i wanted it done sooner rather than later. we went to 1 ENT who said he wouldnt do it before 6 months, but we found another dr that only does tongue-ties...she was absolutely incredible. i am so glad i had it done! he was breastfeeding 10 min later! FM me if you want her info!
ETA: im glad we had the procedure done for DS, but i should add that when we went to get the procedure done, the dr checked DH and I and found that DH was tongue-tied! his is mild and he never even knew he had it...it has not affected him at all...

Re: Questions for moms whose DC were/are tongue tied
I thought something was up with his tongue as soon as I gave him his first bottle. The Dr. snipped it in his office 5 days after birth. DS bled for a few minutes but it wasn't too bad.
