questions for those with initial certification...
I was on the nysed website but I still have some questions. My elementary cert is permanent but my TESOL cert is initial. I know that the state recently switched the initial from 3 years to 5. Does the initial automatically turn into professional after the 5 years or do I have to apply and pay a fee? I met the requirements of having a masters and teaching 3 years when I received my initial. Do I just sit back and wait the 5 years? (5 years ends 9/09)
Also, I understand that the professional development hours don't start until July 1st of the year I receive my prof cert. So, I'm guessing there is no point in logging hours now since they don't count. I plan on calling BOCES on Monday but wanted to see if any LIFers knew the deal. Thanks!

I am trying to figure this out myself. I am a HS teacher with initial cert. and want to make sure I file for my professional cert. within the appropriate time limit.
I let you know if I find anything out.

i don't have an initial certificate, but i would imagine you would have to apply and pay the fee to make it professional. those with provisional certification have to apply and make it permanent when they've met the requirements, so i imagine it would be the same for you. anything to suck some more money out of us!
