Questions re Ultrascreen
I am going for the ultrascreen today for Down Syndrome at Winthrop Perinatal....
Questions:
1- Does my bladder have to be full? Sorry if its a dumb question
2 - Do they give you pictures?
3 - Is there anything I have to do to prepare for the test?
4 - Overall what should I expect?

Re: Questions re Ultrascreen
Ive heard mixed reviews about the bladder issue..i went full for mine and they made me empty it out.
I did get a few great pictures but the best is seeing your baby on the screen in action. They try and get the baby to move around a lot to take the measurements they need so its great. Much better picture than the regular sonograms you get.

Re: Questions re Ultrascreen
My bladder was not full when they started on me but was filling up as they were doing it. At one point, they had me empty it.
We got a handful of pictures from the sono. It was cool bc it looked much more like a baby than it had the time we saw her.
There was nothing that I needed to do to prepare for the sono...just fill out paperwork.
Good luck!

Re: Questions re Ultrascreen
Sorry, we chose not to have the ultrascreen, so I don't have all the answers for you. Here is what I do remember:
If I was going to do the test, there was a finger prick I had to do at home to send blood into the lab. I guess they use the blood together with the ultrasound to get the results.
Since this is early on, I am assuming that your bladder may have to be full, but I am not positive (as I said we didn't do it!)
Good luck and enjoy! I am sure you will get to see plenty of your little munchkin!!!

Mine was done at my OBGYN's office in GN, but here was my experience:
1. My dr.'s office didn't care if my bladder was full or not. Mine was b/c it always is these days. I had to empty it 3/4 of the way through the sono so they could check my ovaries.
2. We got 4 great pics!!
3. No test prep required
4. Overall, it was a sonogram followed by a blood test. The whole thing took about 45 mins.

Re: Questions re Ultrascreen
For me, she had me empty my bladder, and we got a picture. This test is up to the baby being coroperative, they need a side profile shot, so they can measure the back of the neck. If they are able to get it, they take blood afterwards also, part of the screening. Also the test must be done at the right time otherwise it will be false results. if done too soon. Dont get yourself all worked up over this test. Best of luck for you and your BAby.

Re: Questions re Ultrascreen
Thank you ladies for responding...
I just got back....I got two pictures (hope to scan them tonight) and DH was able to see the baby moving around
His/her hand was in front of his/her face at one point...DH thought he/she was sucking a thumb...lol
I got emotional in the middle of the sonogram....no idea why but I was smiling and crying at the same time.

I had my ultrascreen today too. Wasn't it great? It was so much more fun than the last because of all the movement. We saw the baby yawn and wave her arms. The tech even gave her educated guess on the sex...A GIRL! It was definitely emotionally overwhelming so I can totally understand getting tearful. Now, I can't wait for the next one!
