quick q about rectal thermometer temp taking

So the thermometer instructions say to lub the tip before inserting but it says NOT to use petroleum jelly (vaseline) so what the heck do you use?

My ped told me to use vasoline.

That's what I thought but it says it on the instructions not to use it and the vaseline also says for external use only
