Quote for mounting TV and surround sound

I just received a quote to mount my flat panel tv over my fireplace.

The guy is only running the cable up there and two surround sound speakers. He is also providing the mount. He doesn't have to do any electrical work.

The fireplace is gas (no chimney) and he has direct access to the basement below it.

This is the quote he gave me. I think it's ridiculous.

$1,120

I am ready to do this myself. The hardest thing is going to be fishing the wires. I think I can learn to do that!

Do it yourself. For that quote, you can buy yourself another TV.

Okay - so it is ridiculous! Heck, I know someone who had a guy wire their ENTIRE house for surround sound AND mounted a TV for $800!

Re: Quote for mounting TV and surround sound

You can buy a mount at monoprice.com for $70 bucks. That's probably where he is going to buy it from.

Thats a lot of money. Why not ask him if he will be fishing the power wires for the TV through the wall.

If he is then that is against electrical code and he isn't even doing his job properly.

He isn't - I am hiring a separate electrician to do some odd electrical jobs around my house (including adding an outlet over the fireplace).

Here is my TV in my Den, You have access to your basement so you can use an IR remitter and keep all of your electronics in the basement. I need to take a new pic with my surround and PS3 in the basement on the new shelf but, this gives you an idea....

Bc my wires are not visiable they went thru the mount that extends off the wall and the mount alone was like 750 bucks.... also my sound sound wires are in the walls also and the speakers are mounted to the wall..

I also have a TV comming out of my ceiling .. look in my profile for the pic.. you can see them

You think so? the one we bought off racksandstand.com ripped the TV off the wall.. My husband is a professional and he almost died.. then we went and got another one from BJ's and the same thing happened so we went to Best buy and got the mount and NO worries.. it extends off the wall and changes direction.

My TV is also I believe 61 inches ..

I have less than 150 invested in all of my mounts and I have 3 tv's mounted on the wall, If you use the correct bolts and attach your mount to the studs.....

No worries

Thank you for sharing!

Yes, I do have access to my basement below. So I can just run everything downstairs.

It is around a fireplace which is going to make it a little tricky, but I think I will be able to do it.

I think that's very steep. It's not that hard at all and it seems like you have a great setup with no obstacles.

We have a 50-something inch tv and the mount was less than $200. The mount tilts but doesn't have an arm to come off the wall. I would want a tv that size to come off the wall anyway.

DH put it up with the help of his friend. They used special bolts that hold up 500lbs a piece I believe. The thing is solidly mounted and it didn't take long at all.

We didn't fish wires through the wall because we have furniture under the tv that hides all but 4" of the wires. DH said he could do it very easily but we just didn't see the point for our situation.
