Rabbit Owners
Anyone let their rabbit run free?
I've been letting her do it around the house during the day, but I am worried she is going to chew wires and stuff. Any experience with this?

Re: Rabbit Owners
Have you experienced her biting or scratching at you?
A couple of times I went to pick her up and she actually bit me (really hard).
She's about a year old.

Re: Rabbit Owners
I had a bunny for a few years, he passed but we would only let him out when we could suoervise, otherwise he'd chew everything including the carpet.
He stopped letting us pick him up, he would squirm away but never bit or scratched.

Re: Rabbit Owners
We let our girl run free when we're home. During the day and overnight, she's in her cage. Just be sure to bunny proof any wires or places he or she might get into that are dangerous.
We joked that our first bunny was part termite!! She ate everything (molding, carpets, furniture, etc.) and had to be supervised very closely. She was a very cuddly bunny. She would sit on your lap for hours and loved to be held like a baby.
This little girl is completely different, she doesn't chew anything except her toys. However, she HATES being picked up. She will lay down on the floor next to you and let you pet her for hours, but you can't pick her up without her bolting.
As far as the biting and growling....bunnies don't like it if you approach them too quickly. Some buns never lose that fear. The pest thing is to approach him from the top and pet his head. Also, just sit on the floor with him in his "space." He'll get curious and come looking for attention.

Re: Rabbit Owners
I had the same rabbit for 15 years. In the warm months she had a giant outdoor half-covered run and in the cold months she was inside. She had to be kept in an area where she couldn't chew anything b/c several times she bit through things (like my telephone wire while I was on the phone and quite a few baby dolls are missing toes).

Re: Rabbit Owners
She seems happier out of the cage. We were away over the weekend and my dad came by to take care of the animals and I think he bent the wire on the cage, so even though its closed, she can make her way out if she bangs on it enough lol.
She has been friendlier with petting her. She basically lays in the same area and goes to her cage to eat and drink.
I think she is starting to come around more.

Re: Rabbit Owners
The other thing I would suggest is leaving a litter box outside of her cage. My first bun liked to have one in the bathroom as well as in her cage. This bunny ONLY uses the one in her cage. We put an extra one in the bathroom but after 2 months of her never using it (and never having an accident), we took it away and she runs in and out of her cage whenever she needs to go.
It just takes time for them to trust you. Glad she's doing better!!

12 is rare too! The vet couldn't believe we had three so old when I took mine in for her eyes when she was 11. My sisters and I all had a bunny from the same litter. My sisters' lived to be 12 and 13 and mine was 15 (blind, deaf and arthritic- but still chowing down on her carrots up until her last breath) Must have been good breeding!
OP-I also agree about the litter box.
