Radiation/chemo and infants

My grandmother is going to be undergoing either radiation or chemo for her breast & lung cancer. I know it is not safe to be around radiation or chemo patients while pregnant, but how about an infant? Can I bring DS (who is just 5 1/2 months) with me to visit my grandmother? My grandmother was released from the hospital and will be doing either out-patient treatments or taking pills (which is a form of chemo).

Re: Radiation/chemo and infants

so sorry to hear about your grandmother. My son was around 6 months old when my grandfather was on chemo/radiation. His Dr made it clear to the family that young babies should not be around him while he is going thru treatment, I feel dumb saying I dont remember exactly why, something having to do with infants having very low suseptability & something having to do with skin to skin contact?Chat Icon
I would def check w/Dr.

Chat Icon Chat Icon for your grandma.

I've been having continuing testing on my kidney for the past year, and every 6 months, I have a renal scan, using radioactive dye and lasix. I am told to stay away from my children for a period of 24 hours after the readioactive testing, so I would assume it might be the same for your grandmother.

Re: Radiation/chemo and infants

That's what I was thinking. But if I go and visit my grandmother and than go home and hold DS, I wonder if it can still affect him or "rub off" on him?? I think I will call the ped. to find out.

Re: Radiation/chemo and infants

When I was doing radiation and chemo JAG was about 3 months old and I specifically asked about holding my child as I was concerned about this. All my docs (and my second opinion docs: oncologists, radiologists, surgeons etc) agreed it was ok.

Re: Radiation/chemo and infants

My father had one round of chemo and was told not be around any infants or children who had recently received a vaccination. This is because a vaccination is an actual live virus and chemo patients have a very weakened immune system and are more suseptible to illness.

Re: Radiation/chemo and infants

When you get radiation theraphy (besides seed implantation and Iodine ablation theraphy) you are not radioactive after the procedure. It will not affect your children after the procedure.. The Chemo is a drug that is given every couple of days that brings your immune system pretty low, but wont rub off on your children..
So pretty much your children are not affected by these procedures..

If you are getting a diagnostic Nuclear Medicine scan then you will be radioactive for about 24 hours and should ty to stay away from pregnant women and children... No breastfeeding for 72 hours...

I am a Nuclear Medicine Technologist that is how I know this stuff..Chat Icon
