Can you tell me what it is that drew you to buying a ranch and what the advantages are?

Re: Ranch owners
It was the price for us, ranches seemed to cost a little less.
Other than that I cant stand having a ranch

Re: Ranch owners
I grew up in an L-shaped ranch & loved it. I don't know why ranches get a bad rep, I can't remember any downside to the one I grew up in. The bedrooms we down a hall that was seperate from the main living areas & it was nice never having to carry laundry up or down stairs. The house we bought was a ranch but the previous owners added a second story several years ago.

Re: Ranch owners
I just like the look of a ranch as opposed to most other houses, hence those are the ones I was attracted to as far as going inside.

Re: Ranch owners
DH and I weren't even considering one, but we looked at whatever was out there in the section of the town we wanted. We loved our ranch b/c of the additions but on (side and back) and open floorplan. Plus, there is is a lot of potential for additions/changes inside.

Re: Ranch owners
We didn't buy a ranch, but there are a bunch in my neighborhood that are adorable (mostly L-shaped, one story). I like the idea that everything's on one floor. I think they are really cute and cozy.

Re: Ranch owners
One thing I liked with the ranch we used to live in was that with kids I didn't have to worry about stairs

This is true for us as well... My DH always wanted a HUGE house and unfortunetly we couldnt afford it but with our ranch we can expand when we need to - Its open floor which is really nice and plus it had all the plus's we wanted.. Garage and it leading intot he house, basement, two baths, 3-bedrooms, DR, EIK... It just winded up to be a ranch...

Re: Ranch owners
I grew up in a ranch and I love my moms house. She expanded off the kitchen to make a casual eating area and a seperate formal dining room, and the kitchen became bigger. She also has a room above the garage that is used as an office, and a full finished basement with the second full bath. Her house is not small... though it originally was smaller before the extension, it was still comfortable. If you decide to buy the ranch I can show you pics of what my mom did to hers for ideas.

I feel the same way. We are going to add a 2nd story in the next year or two.

Re: Ranch owners
I have a hi-ranch, which is two levels, but really cuts up the living space, IMO. Personally, I hate it! I hate the fact the main den/playroom is on the lower level, ours is half underground, and I hate the fact our bedroom are on the same floor as the living room, kitchen and dining room. Whenever I cook, I go to bed at night and my sheets smell like the dinner I made

Re: Ranch owners
I grew up in a ranch, but my parents added a second story when we were about 8 and 10. I think for my mom, it was convenient to have us on the same level when we were napping during the day and when we went to bed.

That is the reason why we would buy a ranch also.

We're in the process of closing on one for this very reason. It was the ugliest house on the nicest block we could afford, and see the possibilities of what we can to with it from looking at the surrounding homes.

Re: Ranch owners
i have a ranch... and what got me is #1 price, it was more affordable, and although it didnt have all the room i necessarily would need later, it had enuff room for now, and had great expanding possibilities.

Re: Ranch owners
I had no inclination to every buy a ranch, however when we walked into our house we immediately fell in love with it. It's an expanded ranch, so we have two bedrooms and a bath upstairs, two bedrooms and two baths on the main level and a finished basement. The house is absolutely huge and the prior owers updated everything (except the bathrooms, that's our next project)

Re: Ranch owners
I'm still renting, but a ranch is the style home I prefer. I love length compaired to height. I grew up in a ranch and it just feels like home to me! The ranches in our neighborhood are EXPENSIVE, but we completely prefer them over capes...so we'll see!

Re: Ranch owners
we bought a ranch 2 years ago because the price and the neighborhood were right! it is kinda small, but we are expanding next month and putting in 3 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. we are also knocking down walls to make a large living room and a formal dining room, so the main level will have a nice open floor plan. with the finished basement we should have plenty of room!

This sounds like EXACTLY what my parents did about 20 years ago!
They built a second story with three BRs and a bathroom and knocked down the wall between the two bedrooms on the first floor - it's a huge, long room and it's been either a dining room or a living room throughout the years.

Re: Ranch owners
I grew up in a cape, my whole family lives in capes and I just bought a ranch. At first, I really wanted a cape, but a ranch is nice. I have elderly grandparents that can easily get in and out of my house. No more up the stairs with laundry. Plus we can always build up when we are ready.

Re: Ranch owners
we bought a ranch.....and i was deadset against living in one (just always liked the separation of floors- bedrooms, living space). anyway, we weren't really looking to buy a home, but this house went up for sale in my neighborhood, my mom saw it in our local newspaper, we have half an acre of property, and when we really thought about it, we decided we would never find our dream home, and that we wanted to build one for ourself. so, we bought our house with the intention of adding the second floor in the future and expanding out the back. its not the nicest house on the block...but the location is perfect! its going to take time, but we'll get there- we plan on doing the addition over the course of the next 5 or 6 years. good luck!!!
