My daughter and her boyfriend are going to Governors Ball this weekend on Randall’s Island. We’re trying to figure out the safest, easiest way for her to get there from Long Island. It looks like she can take LIRR to Penn and then make her way to the ferry at 1st and 33rd. There is a 28 min walk to the ferry (unless there is a direct bus but I have no idea).

Or take the subway to Williamsburg and get on the shuttle bus directly to Randall’s Island.

Being not very experienced in all this, which do you think is the best bet?

Any help is appreciated.

I don’t think either one would be unsafe. I doubt it would really take 28 minutes to do that walk to the ferry, especially for a young couple.

Both the shuttle and ferry will be crowded so IMO is just a pick your poison situation. Again though, I would feel perfectly safe either way.

I would do the train to Penn and then the ferry. It sounds like it will be a lot quicker and more direct than going to Penn, taking a subway to Brooklyn and then taking a bus.

Catch the ferry at 33rd & 1st. It is a long walk, the M34 bus runs down 34th street to 1st avenue. It is a select bus, so they must swipe their metro cards at the kiosk and get a receipt for the bus. Stop is right outside the LIRR station at the top of the escalators.

This. The walk from Penn to 33rd and 1st is long, especially when they plan to spend a long day in the sun.

Thank you! Dumb question, where is the kiosk? Is it on the street? In Penn station?

They are on the street.

And they will need a metro card. They may be able to pay cash at the smaller machine in this picture. But they need exact change and it doesn't take bills. A metro card is just easier.
They can get a metro card from a machine at in Penn Station at one of the A, B, C or 1, 2, 3 subway stations.

I thought the smaller machine (on the right) in your picture was a parking kiosk but I see it has a similar colored sign on the side so I'm not sure I'm right.
I'm not positive that you can pay cash for the SBS (select bus service) at the kiosks. Since your daughter is coming through Penn, she should get a MetroCard at one of the machines in the station.

Get the metro card inside Penn.
The vending machines are located just past the exit to 7th Ave & 34th Street escalators. opposite track 20/21 (McDonald's). There is also a station booth if she needs help in buying the MetroCard.
Easier (and safer) than trying to feed cash or a credit card into the machine on the street.

We did the bus off of Randall's Island once. It was a cluster F because you have tens of thousands of people wanting to get on the bus at one time.

So if she goes that option be prepared to either leave early or wait a long while. Maybe since its a festival more people will leave at staggered times so it wouldnt be as bad as a regular concert.

Nope not a parking kiosk. Its to pay cash. But you need coins. I passed one earlier and double checked.

How did it go for your daughter? Hopefully she wasn't there yesterday with the rain and thunder. I say Lee Goldberg posted a video of people leaving during a thunderstorm.

They did take the ferry but ended up making the walk from Penn to the ferry.

But yesterday was a clusterf*ck. The festival day was supposed to start at 12, but because of the "threat of storms" they pushed the start of the opening until 6:30 pm (even though it was beautiful out all day!!). So they got all the way there and of course, it started downpouring and they were did a mandatory evacuation because of lightening. So she never got to see any bands play and the one band she was ecstatic to see was cancelled. She was so sad.

Sorry it ended that way for your daughter. That's very frustrating. There's always that risk with the summer festivals. (My kids have been through it many times-)
But when they evacuate, where are all these thousands of people supposed to go? I guess it absolves the promoters of liability?

It actually was very scary because it was clear they had no emergency evacuation plan in place. Kids just mobbed all the entrances, ferries were overcrowded, kids were panicking. I hope it was a wake up call for the city.
