Random people annoyance
I cannot STAND it when people spell every single word of their name/address...ESPECIALLY when it's something common or easy. I know there's billions of ways to spell things, but unless its uncommon, you shouldn't spell it. If it's Smith spelled Smyth, then I get it. But otherwise, I am somewhat educated and intelligent and I don't need to having things spelled for me

Re: Random people annoyance
I totally get what you mean, but just to play devil's advocate since I always spell things for people: My last name is Marx. To me, that is simple, like Karl Marx and Richard Marx. However, I have gotten Mark, Marks, and Max. Therefore, I've just started spelling it out for people. I totally understand why someone would write "Marks," but that just isn't what I first think of.
I've also lived on very simple street names for the past 10 years, and people always mess that up too, so I just spell them out.

Re: Random people annoyance
Perhaps its because they've come across people that can't spell quite a bit.
It is annoying, but I usually just cut them short when I have written it down.
I have to say, that I've had people ask me for an address and it is a 'Court' address, and they've spelled out "C-o-r-t" while I'm on the phone with them and I have to correct them.

Re: Random people annoyance
I totally understand, but I also have to at least ALWAYS spell my last name, especially now that I'm married. I used to have to spell my maiden name (even though is was pretty phonetic), but now my last name is SEYLAR.......but it's pronounced SI-LAR (like the character in Heros). Unfortunately, everyone thinks it's pronounced SAY-LAR, so if I don't say it AND spell it, they get it wrong, lol.

Re: Random people annoyance
I had a car salesman read me a VIN the other day with the letters U, J, W, S in it --- He SERIOUSLY said U like Unit, J like Johnson, W like Wang, S like Stick
I didn't give him the satisfaction of a laugh, but i cracked up once I hung up

Re: Random people annoyance
I always had to spell my name out. So I just started automatically doing it. My first name is Melissa and I have had people spell it Malisa. So to make it easier I just spell it. When it I got married I thought my new name would be easier. I was so excited until the first time I had to give my name and someone aked me to spell it.

Re: Random people annoyance
On a related note, my DD was playing hangman on my phone this morning at my DS's soccer game and asked me how to spell cockroach so I said "C-O-C-K", I usually break works down in 3 or 4 letter bunches when helping them spell so I did it without thinking. I was ready to spell the rest and she said "I got it" but of course the other parents probably only heard my much louder voice and not hers at all. I'm sure all that was heard was me going "C-O-C-K" to my 6 yr old.

Re: Random people annoyance
I disagree. I think it's helpful. MOST people are MORONS and I would rather spell things out for them the first time around...and usually they still manage to f*ck it up.

Re: Random people annoyance
I agree there are many morons out there when it comes to names. The spelling of Michael sounds overboard but who knows?! My maiden name was hard for people and I could see in their eyes how they mentally shut down when I said it. Even when I spelled it, it just messed with people bc it has a combo of using a "U" where it sounds like an "I" and a blend of consonants that don't go together in a way that makes sense for some brains. Forget trying to pronounce it. The laughable part is it's not really a hard name.
Anyway, I married someone with what I thought was an easy name but people still mess it up. Mostly not thank God but I've had people add an S to the end or a W in the middle to make it what they think it should be. So I get the spelling thing.
The example given above of the spelling of "Susun" makes it so clear why some things need to be spelled. Sure it doesn't matter on a Starbucks cup but it does in many other places.

Re: Random people annoyance
In college, we called one of my suitemates "Crees, how you spell?" He ordered Chinese food to be delivered, and when he told them his name was Chris, they said "Crees? How you spell?"
Apparently, there are NO obvious names....

Re: Random people annoyance
I always spell my last name, it's not hard to spell, but the first letter can sound like something else when over the phone.
I always spell my town too. I think most towns on LI have to be spelled out when talking to people out of state.
