Random: People offering you support
We lost everything in our basement and our house is unlivable at the moment until we get a boiler at the very least. (If we didn't have DS we would probably rough it out).
I've had people out of the area reach out to me and my family for my address because they want to send us gifts and such.
I feel so funny though because we are lucky, have a place to stay and food. All really is not lost, I have hope that FEMA will replace our appliances.
I know that there are people in 1000x worse situations.
How would you respond? I personally would like to see these things go to places like Rockaway and Broad Channel, or to the people who lost everything that couldn't make ends meet already.

I live in Broad Channel and it makes me extremely uncomfortable.. It also makes me very emotional and grateful... Its hard to think that thank you is enough..

I can't tell you how to feel, but I know for myself, I feel so fortunate just losing power. I can't get the people out of my head who were greatly effected. It's not a pity thing, I just think about how much I have in comparison and want to do all I can to help.

I would let people know that you feel very fortunate to have as much as you have.. but that you will gratefully accept donations that you can pass forward to families that are even more in need.

If you need help, please accept it, or tell them about others who need help.
There are SO many of us who are in better shape and heartbroken over the devastation and we WANT to help. We feel helpless.
If you're in need and we can help, LET us help. It will help you, but it will help us too.
I think a LOT of people who were not affected or not badly affected feel this way

I feel the same way. We need things only because we are unable to go out and get them. But we have wonderful family and while it will be tough, we will make it through.
I hate to say, b/c of LIF, I wont accept anything b/c I don't want my family's every move to be criticized for the next 5 years.

I agree, be honest. It sounds like you are grateful. For those of us that did not suffer from damage to our homes, it's hard to assess what is needed and to whom. I understand that someone like you has family, insurance, savings maybe and a lot of people are offering help. If I knew you (like my coworker on the South Shore) I'd offer moral support if there is nothing else you need and like you said give to those that need it. Most people like you are HOMELESS now for a while, there is really nothing anyone can do, that's the tough part.

Take the help. You would want people to accept it if you offered it. I gave money to the red cross but i felt I made more of a difference getting my friend lunch. I also would not let the opinions of people on LIf effect taking something to help my family.
