How do you deal with vacation, social time and just general life and kitty care?
My big guy Buddy is a diabetic. Every 12 hours he gets an insulin shot. I know you won’t laugh and I KNOW you’ll understand that my husband and I have not taken a guilt free vacation since the day he was diagnosed. We don’t stay out late, we don’t see movies at 9pm.
For us, we used to use the vet but it got so darned expensive. Since he’s a cat we can’t just leave him at someone’s house we have to bring the special food, insulin and litter box. So far we’ve been hauling him over to my BIL for care because I trust he knows how to use the opti-click pen and so forth. Our kittens are left at home with extra food and checked on once a day. The little one’s litters are cleaned, etc and the big guy gets what we call a vacation at my BIL’s while we’re away
So far this as worked great. But we are very conscience of my BIL’s schedule and try to never interfere with his own things he has going on and always ask before we schedule vacations.
All and all we don’t mind. We call them our kids and frankly I still think this is easier than an ACTUAL child since I can leave them home all day alone!
What are your accommodations?
PS: If anyone is wondering – my Vet isn’t THAT bad and they love Buddy, but it’s about $30 a night and that adds up when you’re gone for more than a couple days. Also I like knowing that if its more than jut a weekend that Buddy can stay in a home where he can prowl and have more freedom than the back of a vet’s office.

I am actually very fortunate to live next door to a good friend who not only takes care of Lucy when we travel, but will sit and play with her while we are away. For a chronic stomach issue, she takes daily meds in her food.
If I didn't have this situation, I would look for recommendations from my vet. Perhaps a pet-hotel?

My cat Tello has lymphosarcoma and gets prednisone 2x daily. I have a pet sitter that comes to my house 2x a day when we go away. I mentioned her on the pet sitting thread, but I'll put it here as well. Most animals do better in their own homes than boarded. http://www.yourpetnanny.com/

We just recently lost our dog after a 41/2 year battle with diabetes. He had to be taken outside and we had to collect his urine in a cup so we can test it to see how much insulin we should give him. This had to be done twice a day. As a result of the diabetes he had kidney and liver problems and his sugar would sky rocket and go into seizures. SO leaving him alone and boarding him was not an option. We went on 2 2week vacations. Every second we felt guilty and worried about leaving him. On both occassions we had my brother take care of him. I Went with my parents so if my brother could not do it my DH took care of him. A few times when we had weddings or long outings and knew we would not be home til late i had to have a friend come and take care of him. THis stopped after my friend did not see him throw up his food and gave him his shot that night. THe next morning he had 2 seizures. Our life was built around him. Although i know he is in a better place now, i would give anythign to have that back. We just had to make sure that weather it be me, my dad, or my brother, one of us had to be there to take care of him. But he was worth every single second of it.
