Random travel question...
I am taking DS to Italy alone in October. Obviously DH and I are not divorced, but will I need a note or anything to take him out of the country by himself?
We both have passports.

Re: Random travel question...
If you are leaving the country, you need a written affidavit from DH. Reason being, you could be "kidnapping" your child and running. They have no way of knowing that at the airport.
That's why I'm glad DD's BC doesn't show her father's name. IF I want to leave the country, I am free to do so

Re: Random travel question...
Are you sure about that you need a signed affadavit??? I have travelled several times from the UK to the US with my son (who has a UK passport) and this has never been a requirement.
I am going to check about this on another board that deals with immigration...

I work with someone who had to have a signed affidavit. Maybe it depends on the airline then?

Re: Random travel question...
Okay, I found out the answer to this question...
If you aren't going through a divorce or involved in any custody/court cases, you don't have to have any paperwork signed or anything else at all.
Hope that helps! (an immigration lawyer just tole me this!)

Its not about them knowing, its about you knowing that you are responsible to have these papers on your person.

But it seems the "rule" is in effect to protect the children from kidnapping, so should require documentation to prove custody/divorce/marriage etc. Not just rely on the parent since obviously if someone was fleeing the country with their child, they wouldn't exactly be honest.
I was told if there is a father's name on the passport, you need an affidavit (notarized). I guess better safe than sorry because it would be horribly inconvenient to get to the check in counter or customs and have to turn around and go home!!

Re: Random travel question...
Well its all about what you feel comfortable doing...like I said, I have taken my son internationally by myself a few times and they don't ask this question at the check in desk, nor have they asked this at immigration, the IO's are usually quite au fait with what is needed, so if you feel comfortable having one, by all means go right ahead, but in my experience, as someone who has done this, you don't need one.

Re: Random travel question...
I'm a paranoid freak so I'd bring one in the off hand chance I got asked. But I also carry a card in my wallet with instructions for who first responders should call if I'm incapacitated.

Maybe it's because you live in the UK and the rules are different for US residents? I could be way off, but just a thought!

Well I travel on a US passport which doesn't say where I reside.
