Rating a Lyft Driver less than 5 stars
Booked a Lyft from JFK to the place I had my car parked (about a 20 minute ride). Upon pickup at the airport, the driver didn't offer to help with the bags (maybe this is the norm..but never ever has been the norm in my personal experience when I've used Uber or Lyft at the airport), he was talking on his personal cell phone while driving and going probably 70mph and weaving in and out of other cars. I left him a 3 star review (and quite honestly I feel like I should have given him 2 stars). My SO said he would never leave someone less than 5 stars because he appreciates the fact that they are out their doing their hustle to make money and low ratings screw their ability to get business. I strongly disagree with him about leaving a stellar review for less than stellar service. What's your opinion?

Re: Rating a Lyft Driver less than 5 stars
I agree with you. If we can't rate people less than 5 stars even if they perform less than 5 star service, then what on earth is the point of the reviews? Kind of a waste in that case.
That's like going on Amazon and always leaving a 5 star review on products even if they suck. I wouldn't find reviews very helpful in that case.
If it's a minor issue with Uber or Lyft, I'd over look it. But the speeding and talking on the phone- no I wouldn't overlook that.
If you are concerned about bad reviews affecting your livelihood and your hustle, then perhaps you should provide great service.

Ditto with what Nell said.
We are becoming a society of being too easy and letting people get away with everything, so they will and do.

Re: Rating a Lyft Driver less than 5 stars
Is it possible that your SO means that if you had less than a 5 star experience then don't write a review. Like the saying, "if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all." I don't think he is inferring you should give 5 stars for less than stellar service. I can understand the mindset of why you shouldn't go out of your way to hurt someone's business.

I've had that happen to me too where they don't even bother getting out of the car and that was pre covid. I am not afraid of giving bad ratings or even giving less tip if you completely suck at your job.

I would definitely give an honest rating based on the experience.
Just curious...I don't take too many Lyft's or Uber's, but are the drivers supposed to help with bags?

I think they used to, but I'm not sure now with Covid. So much is contactless that if that alone were the issue I wouldn't give a bad review. Even talking on the phone I can handle, but dangerous driving? HELL NO. Your job is literally driving someone from A to B safely and you're not doing that. They deserve a less than stellar review.

I don't know the official policy, but I've always had a driver get out and help with the bags. That issue my SO said did bother him a little. With Covid who knows now, however, we are in their personal car, so being a Lyft/Uber driver isn't contactless in the slightest.

Right, I was going to say, he can't touch your bags but you can breath the same air in close quarters for the whole ride? Lol
