RAVE RAVE RAVE - Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank!!
DH and I have the week off, so we've been doing day trips this week with DS. Today we went to the Suffolk County Educational Working Farm. It was FANTASTIC.
Its run by the Cornell Cooperative Extension (I interned for them in college so thats how I heard of them), which if you dont know is an INVALUABLE resource for all kinds of health, gardening, and environmental issues both inside and outside of the home.
So the farm is an actual working farm, and there is NO admission...donations are appreciated though. You can feed the animals (goats, sheeps, etc). They have horses, peacocks, ducks, hogs, llamas, a donkey, a childrens garden, a childrens hands on play and learn area, a wooden train playset, some slides. Its really wonderful and DS LOVED it!
Come July, they have a butterfly house also.
After that we headed to Lewins Farm to do some strawberry picking and to the farmers markets out east! Such a great day.
I definitely recommend you check out all the resources that the Cornell Cooperative Extension (a non profit) has to offer. They have tons of education programs, list of pick your own places on the island, local farmers markets. They have Jr marine biologist classes, they have healthy eating classes for families. Check out the calendar of events while you are on the site.

we have been twice and both times the inmates from the jail next door were there working on the farm which just makes me uncomfortable.
they were their today too, mowing the lawn. Its non serious offenders who have to serve community service. They are harmless. Plus the sheriff and correction officers are there with them.
