Re: Baypost-Bluepoint SD

I got this from NYSUT:

I got the following letter from Kathy Brand, President of Bayport-Blue Point Teachers Association. PLEASE READ IT! It seems that Fred Gorman and company have taken their Tax PAC , LIFER, Tea Party attitudes show on the road. Their slogan is "Take back our schools." You have heard me mention him many times at ED meetings. He caused a great deal of problems in Sachem starting in 1992, when he succeeded in helping elect Tax Pac type candidates to our BOE. He has money behind him, mailing lists, makes robo-calls, etc. He is NOT to be taken lightly. He lives in Nesconset, close to almost every local in our ED. Many people dismissed the Tea Party movement and they have grown...enough to elect a candidate in the 3rd Assembly District, despite our efforts. Fred has aligned himself with that group and others.

The Presidents also received this letter (below) from Kathy and, hopefully, they will do whatever they can among the members. But each of you as a delegate has a network of friends (some may live in Bayport or Blue Point) you can contact. This is not a fight for Bayport-Blue Point, it is a fight for all of us. This is not about the kids, it's simply another slash and burn, bash teachers and destroy all of our salaries and benefits campaign. We lost the special election in the 3rd Assembly District by a narrow margin recently because NYSUT members came out in pitiful numbers to vote. We need to get our members out and support Bayport-Blue Point.

Hi,

I'm writing to ask for any help you can give us in my normally quiet little town of Bayport-Blue Point. Fred Gorman (tax pac) found a follower who's running a slate for the Bd of Ed, and trying to defeat the budget. They're not running a campaign against the real candidates -- they're really running against the teachers. All they talk about is taking over the Board so they can take back the schools from the unions. It's ugly, and they're gaining ground. There are people going door to door with palm cards who have never been seen in town before, telling voters that the Triborough decision has to be overturned, and to elect these candidates as a starting point. The candidates are also openly allied with Ginny Fields, our Assemblywoman, who wrote a letter to NYSUT calling for all teachers to freeze their pay, and publicly rants against teachers any chance she gets.

The situation changes on a daily basis, and I don't have the ability to send each of you labels for letters to your members. We are mailing to our NYSUT member list and will hit them many times before the budget vote. But only about 15 - 20% of our list actually comes out to vote.

Please try to help us if you possibly can by contacting each and every one of your members who live in ZIP code 11705 (Bayport) and 11715 (Blue Point) either by telephone, email, or in person to tell them how important it is for them to vote this year.

They need to vote YES on the budget, and vote the BOTTOM ROW of candidates: March and Licalzi.

They will get a sample ballot in the mail just before election day.

This group is bigger than just our town, and I do believe if they are successful here they will spread.

Thanks so much for anything you can do.

Holy cow. This could be the start of something very bad.

Good luck with this.

As a Sachem resident and teacher, all I can say is do not underestimate his power. I've seen so much over the years, and heard even more stories that would make any teacher/parent of a school-aged child sick.

I agree with july0105. He is now actually publishing our salaries for all of the community to see.

Well, our salaries are public record and I am sure Newsday has already printed them in this climate of attacking teachers.

My union president mentioned how the tax pac group was attacking this district. We were all so disturbed to hear it. I remember this happened in childhood district. Scary stuff. I hope the community supports their kids' education and passes the budget!!
