Wow, that is alot...What is your heat set at??? We got filled 12/3 & just got a delivery yesterday & we still had 1/4 left. We just replaced our entire heating system & have programmable thermostats...

Last year, we went through oil every 4 weeks (original boiler)

I think that is the problem, burner is old. When they came to service it though, they said it was running around 70%, so was not that bad. I have almost a 2700 square foot home with high ceilings so I am sure that does not help.

I leave the heat on 64 during the day (for the dog) and at night around 68.

Maybe I should look into getting a new burner???

Re: Re: OIL, I am going to faint!!!!!

We have a 2200 sq ft home with high ceilings too...We have the programmable thermostats set at 62 when we are not home & 68 when we are. At night it goes back to 62...DH & I are happy to see we are actually saving since changing the oil burner over. I would check into it. For us, we rather spend the $$ on a new system & cut our oil costs. This time last year, we had filled up 2-3 times. We are only on our first fill up since we got the system in late November

Re: Re: OIL, I am going to faint!!!!!

that's about right for the size house. Your burner is not operating at top efficiency.

It should run at around 80-85%. that is costing you money.

Ok thank you!! My rate is $2.89 so that is not that bad, but I am going through it way too fast IMO.

We had the same thing happen 2 months ago and we have the same rate. I lowered the heat during the day and it helped a lot. DD starts daycare next month and I plan on lowering it during the day even more since no one will be home.

This is 100% what I have to start doing more myself. There is no need for me to have the heat on 68 and walk around in a tank, I should lower it and put a long sleeve shirt on - LOL.

I guess it's time to be more conscious of this stuff.

oh yeah, it's around 66 during the day when we aren't home and maybe 67-68 when we are home at night.

When we sleep it's set again at 66.

Our burner is old too and needs to be replaced. Dh, in all his wisdom, said we should get a new one. Chat Icon Guess he wasn't listening when I suggested we do it last summer! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Our bill was riduculously high also. I lower the temp when we're not home during the day. I'm always cold, so it goes to 70 when I get home.

Re: Re: OIL, I am going to faint!!!!!

That is high - Your house is bigger than mine, but DH and I noticed a HUGE difference this winter from last - Our equipment is OLD too - Are your windows and doors new and energy efficient? Our house is O L D - So, this summer/fall we began replacing windows and will continue and hopefully finish this fall -
Just replacing 5 windows in the house so far has made a huge difference in our oil bills -
Obviously the burner is inefficient as well and will have to be replaced too (we're thinking of converting to gas.......)

We keep the heat low (at 60) while we're not home (I also have a tiny 9 lb Yorkie - She's fine, she has a warm blanket to sleep on and loves to wear a sweater)
And while we're home it's up to 65 - 68 depending on how cold it is - While we're sleeping it goes back down to 60 (I know some think I'm insane, but I have bad allergies and asthma and can not sleep/breathe if it's too hot)

We do have new windows, but I think I found the reason for the problem while sitting here ready to kill myself! The attached garage is next to the Den, where we spend most of our time, dogs crate is in there, TV, etc.. and the garage is NOT insulated!!! When we had the inspection done, the engineer even told us this and of course we just moved in and forgot about it. I just spoke to DH and he is off tmrw and this will be his project.

I am sure this will make a huge difference, well hope it will.

Thanks Ladies!

We have turned down our heat a lot because of this. When we aren't home it is at 60, when we sleep 62 and when we are up and about 65. And yes it is a little chilly but we wear more clothes.
