Re-post PG- For moms of more than 1

When did you tell your other children your were pregnant? How did you tell them? How did they handle it?

Our DS was 3 (almost exactly) when DD was born. We started telling him once DW started to show. We didn't know if he would understand the concept without at least a belly showing. We were pretty upfront with him (not what "caused" the baby, we'll save that topic for a later date... Chat Icon ). We told him that he can help mommy and daddy take care of the baby, and kept giving him tons of positive reassurance. He started kissing DW's belly, talking to the baby, and really getting into it. I really think he liked (and still likes) the idea of being the "big brother".

We also watched a few of his favorite shows that had new babies in the episode. Dora the Explorer has twin baby siblings. Blue from Blue's Clues has a baby brother. Other shows, too, but I forget off-hand.

I think it's important to let the older one know that they will not be ignored or forgotten, and they are actually important in helping with the new baby.

I didn't.Chat Icon We weren't telling him until the last minute because I thought he was too young to distinguish between me & a heavy person. I didn't want him going up to them & saying "Baby?"

I guess other people were prepping him because he pointed at my belly & said "Baby?" and I said "Yes, that's a baby" I was so surprised that he knew. Then he pointed to my outie belly button & said "Baby's nose?"Chat Icon

Sesame Street had on an episode the following week about the Three Bears - Mama Bear & Papa Bear were having a sibling. Baby Bear was saying "But we're the three bears! We're a storybook classic!" Just in time for me to deliver at the end of the week.Chat Icon

I told him from the beginning. (He was 4) And he went to all my appoitments so that he would feel involved. And he also went on a tour of the hospital. I wanted him to know that he is still my # 1 baby.
