Reading Assessments in Kindergarten
I work in a small private school and we have limited resources.
I am trying to formally assess my class and level them properly, but I have no resources to do so.
I have looked online for free running records and have found none.
Does anyone have any advice for me??
Thanks

Re: Reading Assessments in Kindergarten
Do you have any colleagues who also teach K at the school, or friends in other schools, who'd be willing to share their resources that work well?

Re: Reading Assessments in Kindergarten
Well...they are kind of old school so I doubt they are worried about leveling them.
Thanks

My Fountas and Pinell Guided Reading book has a few running record pages in the back. My Word Matters book (also by Fountas and Pinell) has them too. I would go to the library and see if you can photocopy out of the Fountas and Pinell books.

Well the Guided Reading book was a textbook for one of my literature classes during my master's, so I kept that one. I ended up buying Word Matters myself. They're not any more expensive than regular textbooks. You can probably find them for cheap on ebay.

Re: Reading Assessments in Kindergarten
Here are some websites that may help you make your own:
http://lms.spasd.k12.wi.us/gems/assessment/KindergartenSpring.ObservSur.pdf
http://books.google.com/books?id=eSfNTlA4aloC&pg=PA165&lpg=PA165&dq=kindergarten+running+records&source=bl&ots=60i2qKO1ZO&sig=dj3OfVkR8UqxsUINB7yBKbutJR0&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result
http://www.mrsjonesroom.com/rubrics/index.html (look for the "recording sheets")
And I don't know if your kids are past letter/sound identification already or not, but to test for that, I used a master laminated page with all the capital letters on it (large standard font, 4 or 5 letters per row and enough columns to take up the whole page, letters out of order), and another with the small letters on it. Then I photocopied paper verions of the chart that I wrote each child's name on, and I would take them individually and ask them to name each letter and associated sound, and I'd mark on the paper the ones they got right or wrong. That way I knew what they did/didn't know, and I also had something to send home to the families so they could work on any letters/sounds the kids were still struggling with. It's good for beginning of the year assessments to see who's ready to read, who needs a little work, and who doesn't really know their alphabet at all yet.

Re: Reading Assessments in Kindergarten
its pretty easy, but time consuming, to make your own running records if you have leveled books already.

Re: Reading Assessments in Kindergarten
You don't really "need" to make running records..it's a matter of checkmarks and other marks made for the first 100 words (less for K, obviously, unless you have real readers). Google "benchmark books" and try to use them..I know that there was a website (a-zreaders, i want to say) that gave free leveled books that you printed out...

Re: Reading Assessments in Kindergarten
Ok give me a FM. I can send you a book that lists a lot of books and you can copy the pages and their levels. Or...I have a password to a website that I can use to look up some leveled books for you. Ooooor...I am willing to let you have some of my leveled readers. You would need A...B...C...D...E...F for K.
