Reading Cert.
As I'm going through the motions of applying for Eled jobs, I've been thinking about going back to get my master's in reading/literacy (my B.A. is in English, my M.S. in ELED). I'm not sure what this would entail, going back for another master's degree. Has anyone done this? Would I have to student teach again? Any advice would be appreciated!

Actually in the process of finishing my degree in Literacy now. I have a Masters in Elem Ed. I am getting a Certificate of Advanced Study in Literacy at Hofstra. You do NOT need to get a second Masters...unless you want to.
ETA...I do not have to student teach I have to do a praticum at their learning center which I am doing over the summer.

I have my Masters in Literacy through LIU. It was 30 credits-no student teaching. However, if I had to do it all over again, I would do my masters in something more in demand such as math or foreign language.

i would try to get a job first.... i know it's hard, but i feel you have to teach for a while to see what really interests you. perhaps you'll get into a classroom and want to get more involved in math, or technology or speical ed. i think a lot of people are just getting a gazillion certifications to see if that helps getting a job. i think school distrcits want to see some experience first and a reason for specializing.
literacy is a great field, but the job market can be tight. however, what you learn from a literacy degree can so easily transfer into a regular classroom, even if you're not the "reading" teacher for the school.

ITA- Have you thought of becoming certified on the secondary level for English? That would complement your BA and definitely give you a reason for specializing- as well as open up a whole new category of jobs you could apply for. I'm dual certified for English and Reading and I love the secondary level.

I started out in undergrad going for secondary and found it wasn't for me. I LOVE working with the younger children and found elementary to be a better fit for me. I also did not go into special ed because my brother has autism (you would think I would have because of this), and I felt like I would spend my career comparing my students to him, and I felt it hit a little too close to home for me.
Thanks for all of your advice, everyone. I am hoping for permanant sub for September. I have met other reading teachers and spoken with them, and felt this would be a good fit for me as well. I'll give it some more thought.
