Reading Don's post "refreshed" the craziest statement I have ever heard...
and by "crazy" I mean beyond racist and ignorant. I've been in Atlanta almost 8 months and I'm aware of the "divide" although for the most part "Southerners are so damn polite" (that was the part of Don's post that "refreshed it")...I've never once experienced anything like this here, until now.
So DH was at the doctor yesterday and there was this 80+ year old caucasian male about to get treatment. Next to him were two African American women and the nurse attending to his needs, who was also African American. Well, crazy old bigot said this:
"You should all thank the war, thanks to the war ya'll free people now, did you know that?"
There was nervous laughter from the caucasian nurses and his elderly wife, who stepped in and said "hush now"...
My DH was sleeping and actually heard it from accross the room (that's how loud it was). I was in shock. He looked like a "typical" Southerner, sort of like George W. with big ears and beady little eyes.
And then his nurse (who's not white) was going to draw some blood and he asked her (in his thick twang):
"Where did you go to school" -She said UGA at Savannah.
"For how long" -She said for 4 years.
"And they let you in? Times have changed." -A new, white nurse came in to finish.
Sad and crazy, right?
Thankfully, not everyone is like him, I'm sure his family must have been pro-confederacy and slave owners, it sounded like a deep rooted thing (he made "other" statements while there) and being that he's so old, I hope that the newer generations don't feel this way anymore. But wow, eye opening.

I can't stand the people in the south who still hang their confederate flags and talk about the war like it was just yesterday. It's over. Time to move on people.

I went to Mississippi and there were confederate flags everywhere. It was so scary to me!
And those comments

I know. It was the "free people" thing that got me.
I was so waiting for him to say something, anything my way because I don't care how old he was, I would have said something back. I would have gotten "really ignant"!!
I feel so bad for the poor people there getting treatment that had to hear that. It was silence other than the nervous laugh.

Re: Reading Don's post "refreshed" the craziest statement I have ever heard...
I agree those comments are racist and disgusting...but is there any way the man could have had alzheimers or some sort of dimentia....when my grandfather was in a nursing home stricken with alzheimers he said some things out loud that I NEVER heard him say in all of the years I had been around him. In no way am I justifying the statement...its just that when certian people are afflicted with alzheimers they can't judge right from wrong anymore

This is possible. He was old. Although his wife didn't apologize for him. She just told him to "hush". And he didn't seem "senile"...he was wishing all the caucasian nurses a "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" even acknowledging that it "may be too early, but I may not be back next week"...and yeah, only to them were there any good wishes. So I don't know about dementia/alzheimer's, but anything's possible, I guess.

I'm not trying to excuse the horrible behavior because I know that there are many people with uglyness out there in them...I would like to believe that if he was acting that way there is a cause, that may or may not be the case.

No, I hear you. We all want to believe in the kindness of others. I know I do!!
The thing is, that until very recently, what he said was "OK" down here.
If he were up north with the "Yankess", then yes, maybe something else was up. But I don't know. I would think his wife would apologize and say something to those he offended (but she didn't) and his twang was very southern, like he hadn't gone anywhere. Ever.
Scary.

WHAT????
the war??? that was 1865 - time to catch up with the 20th century.
Whether it's dementia or not, this man is certainly diseased. Put him out of his misery before he spreads it. Although it's probably already too late for that.

I think his referencing the war clearly indicates that he has some form of dimentia. I wouldnt get upset about. I would feel sorry that he is practically on deaths door and he probably lived his whole life as a closed minded bigot.
