Reading in K

What level reading is your Kindergartener at? Where did they start, and what level are they expected to be at the end of kindergarten?

Re: Reading in K

I have no idea what "level" he started on. No one ever told me. Chat Icon But he could only read a few sight words when he started kindergarten, now he can read the level 2 books like Henry and Mudge with just a bit of help and the level 1 books like the Noodles ones all alone.

My son is in a NYC public school and they're also expected to leave K at D. He just got bumped from C to D a couple of weeks ago.

I asked his teacher at the conference last month and she said he hadn't been tested in awhile but she would guess high E/low F.

Re: Reading in K

C and I don't think he is capable of it but they are pushing them to advance so quickly and leaving a big part of the work on the parent IMO. It is being insinuated that we need to work more and more at home on this, when why not leave him at the level he is truly at and work at it more? We do all the teacher asks of us every night...sight words, reading two books a night, practicing the Reading group books but he still struggles a little bit with the C books right now.

Re: Reading in K

I am not sure what my son's reading level is as they started reading in class only three weeks ago and one of the weeks was vacation. He can read all of the books they send home with him, and he can read level one books independently. He needs help with some words on level two books. When he started kindergarten he could only read his name and stop.

and he came home today with a D level book! He was really frustrated and struggling. I don't get the rush, I really don't.

Re: Reading in K

This thread prompted me to contact DD's teacher since I had no idea. She is at an independent (what she can read on her own) C and an instructional (what she can read with help) D.
