'Real Housewives' star Jo De La Rosa set to 'Date' again
Jo De La Rosa felt like the black sheep of the original "Real Housewives of Orange County."
Now she's hoping her new dating show for Bravo helps change some of those misconceptions.
Production began last week on the first of eight episodes of "Date My Ex," a dating series with a launch targeted for this summer. The show has potential suitors living in her ex-fiance Slade Smiley's house.
"The new show brings me back down to really what's in my life," she said. "It's not to be taken seriously. I'm not on the show to find a husband."
Followers of the original will recall that of the women on the show, De La Rosa, though living with Smiley, wasn't married, was younger than the others and didn't quite fit in.
"I was in a very different place in my life," she said. "I wasn't in a place of wanting to get married and raise kid. This whole world of diamonds and luxury, I just wasn't in that place. I don't even really like diamonds. I'm not into that stuff, the show really portrayed me as such. At the end of the day, whatever makes good TV is the way they're going to cut it."
De La Rosa appeared in the first two seasons of "Housewives," then left when she moved out of the enclave to Los Angeles to pursue a singing career. That's where the new show picks up, with her in Los Angeles, being helped by two friends in the dating world.
"It's kind of an adventure," she said, "my romantic adventure."
Besides working on the show, De La Rosa has been working on a CD called "Unscripted," which she says hits stores Aug. 19. A single will be released in July near the launch of the series.
De La Rosa said she never expected to be a celebrity and doesn't consider herself one. She initially didn't want to do "Housewives," but Smiley convinced her to go along for the ride.
"Slade really wanted to do it," she said. "Being in love with him, you want to make your boyfriend happy."
De La Rosa and the rest of the women on the show were able to capitalize on the frenzy around wives started by ABC's "Desperate Housewives." In the process, De La Rosa became the vixen of the group, with one episode suggesting she was coming on to the son of another wife, which didn't sit well with all fans.
The new show, she hopes, changes some of the perception fans had.
"You know, no one ever wants to be hated," she said. "I feel like, on the show, people either loved me or they loved to hate me. Either way, they still watched, so it was like their guilty pleasure. I do think they will see a different side of me. ... I hope they love me as a person."
