Really need advice re: the MMR - Can't decide whether to split, delay or just go ahead with it
I feel like this is a lose-lose situation. If I delay and DS gets MM or R OR I give it to him and he could have a horrible reaction. I'm considering splitting but worried he will have three horrible reactions instead of one.
I would really appreciate any experience in making this decision. DS is now 16 mos - ped will go along with whatever I want but strongly suggests getting the full MMR ASAP. I was thinking of putting it off until preschool.
The situation comes down to this - DS ALWAYS has reactions to the regular shots. DH had SEVERE reactions to both MMR's and we both have a family history of bad reactions to shots. I am so afraid of this shot b/c it will be the first live virus shot he gets and the most reactive.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Re: Really need advice re: the MMR - Can't decide whether to split, delay or just go ahead with it
It's a very personal decision and one that brings a lot of debate. DH and I have decided to split the MMR and give Varicella on a different date from any of the MMR shots. Our doctor and I made a vaccine schedule that would not bring about much delay in getting all of it finished. As it turns out, DS seems to only get sick when a shot is scheduled, and our doctor has us postpone. So, now I think that some delay was meant to be.

Kryssy had a reaction to the MMR . a small one. No fever, just looked like someone slapped her all over her body. it lasted 2 days and then went away. She was not uncomfortable or upset with it. HTH

I did it on the regular schedule - since DC gets a reaction to every vaccine, I figured I'd rather one big reaction rather than 3 small ones!

Why did you decide to do this? Is there a negative link between the 2? Thanks. I'm STILL doing my HW.

I agree.
DD's vaccines have never been split and she has never had any reaction to anything.

Same here. It's a very personal decision, and you have to do what you are most comfortable with. Go with your gut instinct!

Ditto
DS had his 11 month checkup yesterday and I asked - he will be getting his (full) MMR at the next appointment. My ped said most kids have no reaction; the ones that do have a high fever for a day or two and then it's done.
Good luck with your decision!
ETA: my ped does not give more than 2 'small' vaccinations at a single appointment and would not give another vaccination with the MMR. We go every month up to a year but IMO it's worth it because I agree with him that it'd be too much medicine for such a little baby.

I split it, and also didn't give it till 15 months. But check into if you can still split it. My second son is only 2 months, but my dr told me so I would be prepared that they are not making the split vaccine anymore.

I would never tell someone what to do, but I just went to my Ped last night with the intent to split the shot. They no longer produce the Mumps or Rubella stand-alone shot. Essentially unless your Ped has a stockpile of them, then the split shot may not be an option. Def call now and check before you go nuts trying to decide only to have no option but to give or delay.

In addition..isn't there something else being added to the MMR now and you can't split that version of it? I thought I read that briefly somewhere.

I think we go to the same ped Leeners...He splits up the chicken pox from the MMR b.c he doesn't want to give them both together - you go back a month after the MMR and get the chicken pox shot. I like his shot schedule too.
DD did get a bad reaction which he told me she wouldn't have (then again after he gave it and said no reaction he told us hope you don't have any plans in the next 2 weeks) b.c she never had a reaction to any other shot - but I had horrible reactions to MMR too so I think it is hereditary.

Re: Really need advice re: the MMR - Can't decide whether to split, delay or just go ahead with it
My dd never had any reactions to any of her vaccines.. so not sure I can give advice on what for you to do. This is something you should address to your peds and hopefully they can tell you by experience what to do.
for us we ended up doing the full MMR in one shot, b/c at visit I was told they dont always have the vaccines in stock.. so if I split up in 3 different vacs... they may not have the next one for the next visit.. it would be a hit or miss and would have to go back there every month and see.. with a newborn on the way.. just cant do that. So for us it just made since to have it done and finished with. DD didnt have any reaction to.

Re: Really need advice re: the MMR - Can't decide whether to split, delay or just go ahead with it
I have to say..
I was the first person to do everything my doctor said. I gave all vaccines on time, never split them up etc...I thought people who got worried were being overreactive, even ridiculous...
HOWEVER...
Looking back I think about DS's 2 month shots. He had 5 vaccinations at once. Followed by 2 days of high fevers on and off and acting lethargic. He got over it and was back to being my normal little guy.
Then the sensory issues started later on that year...never ever thought about a correlation between being overloaded with too many shots, but now I seriously wonder. I think my son has a genetic predispostion to sensory issues and these things would have happened anyway. I don't think the vaccines "gave" my son develomental delays or some autistic tendencies but I can honestly say 100% that I JUST DON'T KNOW!!. His reaction was not a good one, I was very upset at the time and wondering why MY kid ran such high fevers while other babies seemed to do ok.
The MMR we delayed and split for our own peace of mind.
With our next child we will split anything we can. No more than 2 shots at once. that is what is comfortable for ME and I know tons and tons of people never have a problem with their child after vaccines. I am VERY VERY PRO vaccine, just a fan now of less at one time.
Hope this helps.

I have delayed the MMR - DD turns 3 in Feb and I will give it to her sometime before Sep when she starts preschool. I will do the same with child #2 and I will not go with the Peds recommendation for all the shots that DD with the next child. I will give less shots and go more often. Good luck

Re: Really need advice re: the MMR - Can't decide whether to split, delay or just go ahead with it
After doing A LOT of research(from the time I was 8 months pregnant) , having a long talk with our pediatrician and talking to few of my pediatrician friends we decided to give DD all her vaccines without delay or separation. It's a very personal decision and very scary. DD is fine and she didn't have any kind of reaction to the shots.

My thoughts are that it's a lot of shots at once, and Varicella alone seems to cause reactions. I wanted to minimize the chance of a very extreme reaction. I wanted him to get the Varicella shot as soon as possible because I had a terrible case of chicken pox at 11 momths old. There are still chicken pox outbreaks and there might be more as more people delay it. I did not want that to be the timing for the other shots. Our plan is to do Varicella first, but that was already delayed due to a stomach virus.
