i don't think you're overreacting a whole lot... this would annoy me too.

from what i can see this person was brought in to make your life and workload easier, and they have done so, right?

if you are looking for a raise or a promotion, it seems to me like you really need to sit down with your manager and request a review. maybe there is something you're not aware of that makes your manager want to continue to check your work and not this other employees.

everything else (the lunches, early breaks, etc) really has nothing to do with you, and while it might be irritating, unless this person is making your job/workload harder, it's really not your place to say anything.

ITA. I would ask for a review and ask your boss if there is room for you to grow within the company, and what you can do to improve your work. There may be a reason why he continues to check your work.

The lunches and leaving early are annoying but none of your business. If you want to start leaving early, you could too.

I agree.

I also think a lot of times it's the attitude. I've seen many people try to break out of administrative roles & get rid of the title, only to be held back because they were the ones that were willing to do the dirty work. Working all of the time is a terrific quality to have in a worker, but you could also be giving the appearance that your co-worker is working "smarter", getting things done, prioritizing better, etc. KWIM?

I find myself doing this all the time... i'll work myself into the ground. I have a hard time seperating work and life, I actually sometimes consider them one in the same. And it's true, the hard worker always gets the cr*p jobs because the superiors know that person will do it

I agree as well - the new person may also be a bit more forward and up front - Just a different personality.
Maybe he asked your manager to lunch, coffee etc. - I know I have made a point to get to know each manager, officer, and executive office I have worked with/for in the political chain - If they don't know your face and your name when they see you .........busting your azz can be useless as far as getting ahead is concerned - Working you tush off is not the only (or best) way to 'get ahead' at work - You need to network, form relationships, etc. - There are many ways to stand out aside from working though lunch etc. -
You're looking at it as what he's doing WRONG in comparison to you, but maybe these are things he's doing right. - If he's getting the job done AND doing all of this other social stuff, he's standing out .........You need to step up your game !! I hate to say that but have noticed many times in my old corporate World.

1/ MEN are never assumed to stay at the "bottom". So whether they deserve it or not, they are usually encouraged to go up by the same people who have seen you "work your butt off".

2/ You on the other hand, you have always given. You sacrifice your vacation for you. You have not valued yourself and how "important" you are also. So in essence, they will keep taking from you.

That new person already has set up ground. His personal time is important and they will respect that and grant him what he wants/needs.



One manager told me once. Well, if someone says yes all the time, we will keep asking that person. If someone is not available, they won't bother them.


I think it's time for you to step up and value yourself "publicly". Show confidence and that you are interested in going up within the company. But you do need to tell people what is in your head. Nobody else knows your ambitions but yourself.
