Really need your advice

Christopher is going to be going into a toddler bed since the baby is coming in June. DH and I were going to do it in April this way he can get used to it before the baby even comes so he doesn't think the baby is taking his crib. My family thinks he is way too young to take his crib away from him. He will be 18 months on the 7th. The baby will be in a basinett for the first 3 months so he won't need the crib for a few months but I just don't want DS to associate the baby with taking his crib.

What would you do?

Re: Really need your advice

I only have one child so I can't say whether or not he will feel like your new DC is taking his crib away.

What I can tell you is that my DD transitioned to a full size bed (not toddler and not twin) at like 17 or 18 months.

She had been done with the crib at like 16 months. Cried like we were killing her everytime she went into the crib. She hated the crib.

We bought her the bed and has never looked back (now 3yrs. old).

I think it depends on the child. DD was defintely ready.

I would try doing the toddler bed asap and see if he likes it. Make a big deal about it and keep it positive.

I would definitely give him time to get used to it before the baby comes.

Good luck!

I'd try it. What is the worst that can happen?

Listen, my sister is 22 months younger than me and my parents had me in a twin bed when I was 17 months old. My girlfriend had her daughter in her toddler bed by 18 months as well. People do it all of the timeChat Icon

I don't think he is too young! We put Kaitee in her twin bed at 18 months. She loves it! At night when I ask if she is tired she says "night-night" and goes and gets into bed on her own!

We waited till the new baby was 4 months old before we made the switch. I wanted her in the crib as long as possible. The transition has been a breeze for us! Good luck!

We took Joseph out (at 24 months) after the Maddie was born since we had her in the bassinet for 3 months. We did a 2 week transition from the time he went into the crib to the time she did. Within 2 weeks, he didn't notice.

Like the pp, ds hated the crib so putting him in a bed was the best thing for him.

I think 16 months is fine to be in a bed but I would gate his door (if you do leave it open at night).
