really stupid question, please don't laugh...

I am so new to this and am embarrassed to ask anyone in person, so I'll ask here....what is the procedure with bassinets and cribs? Do they only use bassinets in the beginning or either or both? I'm just not sure what exactly we need from day one. If anyone can help with timeframes for each, I'd appreciate it. Sorry for the cluelessness.....!! Chat Icon

Dont feel silly - a bassinet is usaully used for the first couple of months. Then the baby moves to the crib. Some people use the crib from day one.

I think it depends on you and the baby. Some go in their cribs right away. Other people would prefer the baby in their room for the first few months. We aren't sure, so we got a pack and play that can be used as a bassinet.

We're going to use the crib from day 1. It's a personal choice. We just figure that the baby's room is right across from ours, so why bother with a bassinet, you know?

Ditto. Actually, we won't bring anything into the house til the baby is born. So the furniture may not be here yet - but within a couple of days after I call the store to deliver it. The baby will be in a pack and play in its room. We will be in ours.

We used a bassinet until DS was 3.5 months old.

Yes, plenty of people use the crib from day 1. But having the bassinet in our room was really nice, I have to say. I didn't plan on it, especially since I didn't even get the bassinet until 37.5 weeks at my shower, but of course my mother knew bestChat Icon

I agree and we're doing the same. The nursery is right next to our room - not even 10 feet away.

This explains it pretty well.

For us, I didn't see the need in an extra piece of furniture (a bassinet). So I am going to set the Pack N Play up in our room just for the baby to sleep in for the first couple of weeks after birth, while I'm still "recuperating". After that he will be in his crib exclusively and the Pack N Play will be used for travel purposes.

I am planning to put the baby straight into the crib. if I decide I Need a bassinet, then I will use the pack & play.

Re: really stupid question, please don't laugh...

My son was big and only lasted in the bassinet until 8 weeks. We didn't need the bassinet (and I borrowed one) becasue he could have gone right into the crib, but since I was recovering from a c-section, it was much easier to lift him in and out of the bassinet than in and out of the crib.

DS slept in the bassinet for about 10 weeks. I was EBF so it was easier to just reach down to feed than to have to get up and walk down the hall.

I registered for a Pack & Play which has a bassinet feature on it which I will use for the 1st few weeks before I move Chat Icon to his crib.

Re: really stupid question, please don't laugh...

Since our nursery is upstairs and our bedroom is downstairs, we will probably have the baby in our room in a pack and play for the first month or two. I don't plan on getting a separate bassinett that I will only use for a short time when the pack and play can double as one.

This is what we did, DD in her crib from the first day home.

I don't think it's a stupid question at all! Since our baby will be sharing our bedroom anyway, will forego the bassinet and just have Chat Icon in the crib!

Re: really stupid question, please don't laugh...

We got the pack and play with the bassinet and set it up in our room. Well DD didn't want any part of it. The 1st night home she screamed all night, every time we tried to lay her down in it. So the 2nd night she went in her crib and has been in there since.

It all depends on what you feel comfortable with and what your personal preference is.

Re: really stupid question, please don't laugh...

I would say it depends mostly if you plan to BF. I know for me, it was so much easier to take DS out of the bassinet, bring him in bed and nurse, and then put him back down. If I was bottle feeding I would have had to get up anyway to make a bottle, so I could have easily sat in the big chair in DSs room and fed him.

Re: really stupid question, please don't laugh...

don't feel silly! i think the answer depends on your parenting style and your baby's personality and needs. we plan to use the bassinette (actually, the pack n play), in our room until we can move the baby into the crib in the room next door. some people prefer to co-sleep (baby sleeping in parent bed with safety modifications). other people prefer to start in the crib right away. i think the timing depends on your individual baby.
