Re: Rear Wheel Drive.......who has it?

I had a volvo years ago that was rear wheel drive. I HATED driving it in the snow... I'll never forget I was doing abou 8mph exiting off of Sunrise, and got on the exit ramp. When I got up to just before the overpass my car lost control and my car actually skidded around and around. It stopped facing oncoming traffic. If it wasn't for a man in a truck putting his hazards on and turning his truck so no one could get by him I would've gotten hit for sure.
That would be a big con for me.... but maybe newer cars are better? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My husband used to have it and it was scary in the snow.
He can't believe the difference since he got front wheel drive- I wouldn't risk it if it were me...

Agreed!

I don't have it now but my sister and brother had it in past cars - I drove both and BOTH were a nightmare... beautiful cars and great in the summer but wow, not good in the winter.

I'll never forget the year my brother got stuck in his mustang cobra on the Goethal's Bridge on his way home for Christmas from Virginia -- and had to stay at the Staten Island Motel for a night Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I guess it is better you found out before you went ahead and really looked into purchasing the car -- or worse, actually buying it. Chat Icon

sorry love.

this is why we HAD to buy another car when we bought our house.

the bimmer has not touched the pavement since sometime in December. ..poor little guy. Chat Icon

if it's going to be your main car and you HAVE to drive in all weather, I would advice against it.

when we bought the car, we had the option of not having to drive it if we didn't want to living in the city. that is the only reason we did.

Re: Rear Wheel Drive.......who has it?

DW had a RWD t-bird that was stuck in the snow. Took an hour or so to dig it out. As soon as we got it out, I zipped my FWD car in the same spot, and got out with no problem either.

Growing up, we had a very steep hill to climb to get out of our neighborhood. We had an old V6 RWD car that would take several attempts to go up the hill. My mom got a 4cylinder FWD and was worried about the smaller engine getting up the hill. Even in the worst snow, the FWD had no problem going up.

My truck is RWD most of the time, but at least I can flip it into 4x4 when the back end starts getting out of control.....

Re: Rear Wheel Drive.......who has it?

It's not that bad.

Driving in the snow is all about KNOWING how to drive in the snow. It's about knowing what situations will cause your car to slip, and knowing what to do when you sense a slip. It's all about reaction.

All the 4WD in the world won't help you if you are simply a bad snow driver. If you are a good snow driver, you can drive anything.

That is true, especially on ice.....nothing helps you then.

But when you have babies in the car, you like to know that you have the safest car possible, and RWD isn't it......

it's bad. the grip on the road is just BAD.

my husband is a great driver. and while we have never (knock on wood) had an accident, these cars are just NOT for driving in inclement weather. it's slow, it's slippy, it's nerve wracking...NONE of the things you want when a child is in the car.

of course driving skill is involved, but out of every possibility, RWD is the LEAST favored for snow.

I had it in my Nissan 240 sx. I crashed twice.

I have had front wheel drive ever since. No accidents since.

that was 18 years ago.

I would only drive a rear wheel drive car in the summer on the driest of days.

See again I don't think it's just about the car, more so than it's about the driver.

I believe that I am an excellent snow driver. I have driven FWD, RWD, and AWD cars. I have slipped at times in all three. But the minute I sense a wheel slipping I know what to do to correct it.

Many RWD cars now have advanced traction control technology. The RWD cars of today are much more safe than those of 10 years ago. Here is BMW's traction control.

BMW's Traction Control

And as far as having the "safest car", I think there is a lot more that goes into having a safe car than just FWD vs. RWD.

we have a RWD bmw. (z3 coupe)

we still won't drive it in the snow.

kudos for you for being super fab. but I don't think it's smart to leave your safety, or anyone else's safety, to your spider sense..kwim?

our car is a DREAM to drive... a friggin dream...but you DO slip. and we have slipped FAR less in our subaru that we ever did, in even the lightest snow in our bmw.

no matter who is behind the wheel, rwd just not the best all weather vehicle to have.

super fab. LMAO.

I agree with the majority of the posters - stay away from RWD. Especially with kids. If you brake hard, you're sliding God-knows-where.

Good luck with the car search!

Hey no problem. Different strokes for different folks. I just don't fear the snow. That's just me. I don't go nuts when snow starts to fall.

When I am buying a car, while saftey is important, it's not the only aspect I look at when choosing a car.

And what is this comment supposed to mean...??? "but I don't think it's smart to leave anyone else's safety, to your spider sense..kwim?"

So according to you nobody should drive RWD cars from December thru April? Or if I choose to drive a RWD car in the snow I am being a bad person?

no, according to ME, you should avoid driving RWD cars in the SNOW. we do have mild winters when we have no snow..then drive away. I have no problem with cold pavement and RWD, just snow covered pavement and RWD.

and my spidey comment is not intended to classify you in any way...before you get your britches in a bunch...I just think YOU have a very high confidence level in the snow, which is all well and good, but most people loathe driving in the snow...and I don't think it's the time for people to start channeling the force.

although I usually err on the wussy side of caution, I think that anyone that drives a RWD car in the snow is putting themselves at a greater level of risk. not sure how that translates into being a bad person though.

I agree. I learned how to drive on a RWD car and had them up until a few years ago. I would have no problem going back to one.

g, I asked my dh what his take was...this was his advice/thoughts

dry pavement? no problem
wet roads? no problem
snow and ice? problem

yes, a skilled driver can drive a RWD through snow, it's true. there are things u can do to make a RWD car perform better in the snow...snow/winter tires are a must, sandbags in the trunk to help the rear wheels get grip, perhaps chains on the wheels...but the avg person is not gonna want to thru all that...or may not have the patience, time, money, or storage for all that it entails

Re: Rear Wheel Drive.......who has it?

I consider myself a very skilled driver, in all types of weather. However, no matter how much skill I have (either real or imagined.... Chat Icon Chat Icon ), I will have more time to react, and less opportunities to NEED to react with a FWD compared to a RWD.

If I can recover from 99% of all slips, odds are, I'll never get out of control with a RWD, since I'll probably never have 100 slips that need reactions. However, with a RWD needing more corrections (even from a skilled driver), odds are higher that you'll have problems. It's basic math. The more instances you need to correct, the more chances you have to not be able to correct....

Thanks Jess.
I consider myself a pretty good if not very good driver...and while I would love to get into this car, I am not adding another thing to worry about when it comes to driving in bad weather, especially since we do a good amount of snow driving. If I wanted to concentrate again I would have gone back to driving stick.........
